THEN & NOW: a biweekly post series celebrating 150 years of history with the Olean Public Library! #oleanlibrary150th In 1908, while preparations were underway for the new Carnegie library building, the library board approved assistant librarian Maud D. Brooks to take the position of librarian; she would be the library director for 33 years. Miss Brooks then supervised the relocation of all the library collections into the second floor of the City Hall, where the library w...ould continue to serve the public until the new structure was completed. By mid-1909, preparations for the new Carnegie building took constant work. Board president W. H. Mandeville was corresponding with the architect, Edward H. Tilton, and local stone suppliers and contractors several times a week. Shown here is Tilton’s sketch of the building’s cornerstones. The cornerstone ceremony was scheduled for July 3, 1909 and was organized by local members of the Masonic lodge. In the typewritten history of the event, it is said that Mr. D. L. Jewell of the Olean lodge of Masons presented to state's Grand Master, Nelson Sawyer of Palmyra, a "handsome silver trowel fittingly engraved to be used by him in spreading the cement under the cornerstone and to be kept as a memento of the occasion. Where might Mr. Sawyer's commemorative trowel be now? We'd love to see it someday.
