We close out #WomensHistoryMonth at #GOHS with Oneonta native Jessie Elvira Jenks. Jenks was homeschooled and kept a diary documenting her life in Oneonta from 1885 to 1892, from the age of 12 to 19. In 1896, she entered the Oneonta State Normal School and three years later was certified to teach music at the elementary level. While Jenks expressed her insecurities about entering the world as a working woman, she remained single and independent throughout her life. In this di...ary entry from January 1, 1889, 16-year-old Jenks wrote a list of New Year Resolutions, resolving not to be vain, selfish, or careless, and to overcome her nervousness. In the mid-1910s, female students at the Ward School No. 2 in Norwich performed a suffrage pageant urging #VotesforWomen. The pageant is one of many examples of upstate women's suffrage activism. Oneonta native, Ethel Scatchard, was a secretary for the local Red Cross during WWI and taught courses in surgical dressing. She was also a member of the Oneonta Women’s Club. In 1919, she died of pneumonia while working at a Red Cross canteen in Paris, where she was buried. She was only 32 years old. That year, Ethel's mother submitted a request for her family to receive an Award of Merit for Ethel's Red Cross service. We don't know if the family received the award, but three years later, in 1922, Mayor C. C. Miller and the women of Oneonta honored Scatchard with a monument and memorial in Neawha Park, which still stands today. Scatchard is one of the many pioneering Oneonta women featured in GOHS's historical collections. #WomensHistoryMonth #OneontaHistory #GOHS #NeawhaPark #fromourcollections #localhistory
