Operation Walk Syracuse 10.11.2020

Below is the post from our #Ghana2019 trip on this exact day last year. We were screening and learning about our patients, and getting them prepped for surgeries that have since changed their lives. We wish we could be there now getting ready to help a whole new group of patients but until we are able to return to Ghana, your help is still needed. Please consider making a gift toward our next mission. With your support we can make our next visit our most successful one yet. D...onate today at operationwalksyracuse.org. _______________________________ While the challenges keep coming, we pushed through with the clinic screening yesterday seeing 105 patients and administering 35 knee injections. Today, we got to sit down and talk with some of the incredible people preparing to have their surgeries. What is clear from speaking with all of them is how much they have had to give up and miss out on due to chronic pain and limited mobility, yet they continue to persevere. Living life from the sidelines is no way to live so we look forward to helping them take their #firststeptoanewlife. #OpWalkSyracuse #Ghana2019 #movementwithoutpain

Happy International Nurse's Day. To our #OpWalkSyracuse nurses and to nurses all around the , thank you. You help people through some of the toughest moments of their lives, hold their hands in times when their loved ones can't, listen while they share their doubts and fears, and provide encouragement and humor when they need it most. We celebrate you today and every day.

We hope that everyone is staying home and staying healthy during this difficult time. Due to the COVID-19 crisis, Operation Walk Syracuse and all Operation Walk chapters will be suspending their trips in 2020. We are hoping to be able to restart in 2021. To our patients and colleagues in Ghana, and to those that were hoping to undergo a procedure in October, our hearts are with you. Stay safe, stay well. To those that have been committed supporters of Operation Walk Syracuse, we still need your help now more than ever. Head to operationwalksyracuse.org/ghana-2019 to see the completed video of our 2019 Mission.

Operation Walk New York is grateful for all of our team members and the entire medical community at large who are at the front lines of treating and containing the COVID-19 virus. You put yourselves at risk to keep your communities safe while providing care and reassurance to those who need your help. We appreciate you, thank you.

"Really knowing that when we went in in the morning we started a cascade of events that would result in happy people at the end of the day." 2020 will be our fifth year going to Ghana and our 5th year working with our wonderful colleagues at St. Joseph's Hospital in Koforidua who welcome us into their hospital each year and make it possible for us to #restoremobility for as many people as possible. As we gear up for this year's mission, please consider supporting our joint efforts with a gift of any size. Donate today at operationwalksyracuse.org.

During our October 2019 Mission, our friend and patient Michael Kofi Anumu took some time to teach us about the Ghanaian tradition of Day Names where newborns are given special nicknames depending on the day they are born and their birth order. These are the names used by their families inside the home but often travel outside the home as nicknames often do. His middle name, Kofi, is the male nick-name that indicates he was born on a Friday. Check out this African name generator to see what your Ghanaian nickname would be and share it with us below! thisworldmusic.com/african-day-name-generator

Received today from Charles: "Hello, I am Charles Hanson, a patient of operation walk 2019 who was walking with crossed legs. A very big thank you goes to the entire Operation Walk team for letting me walk normal again. I hope you will operate the remaining right leg for me to walk even better next year." - Charles is 24 and has been suffering for six years from severe arthritis and avascular necrosis of the femoral head (deterioration of the ball that fits into the hip join...t). It caused him to walk with a scissoring gate and made sitting too painful, leaving him to only be able to stand or lie down. He was unable to pursue his education and was forced to give up many of the things he used to love, including dancing. Francis endured a six-hour bus ride to come to Koforidua where #OperationWalkSyracuse performed bilateral adductor tenotomies and a left hip replacement that would allow him to walk normally for the first time in many years. He was one of the most severe cases we operated on in Ghana last year and is the perfect example of how Operation Walk teams all over the country are changing people's lives. See more

This is Eben, a patient from our 2019 mission in October. He was a friendly face and presence for his fellow patients and staff alike. He wrote to us yesterday to say, Good morning, thanks be to the entire Operation walk team, I am able to walk without crutches. I walk with no pain. Thank you very much to your team. - We love getting these updates and to know that our patients are now able to live their lives free of pain. #movementwithoutpain #mobility4all #restoringmobility ##opwalksyracuse #opwalksyr4ghana
