The last OSA talk of the year is scheduled for December 12, 2017 at 7 pm at the Laser Lab. Director of the Institute of Optics, Prof. P. Scott Carney will give a talk on Synthetic Optical Holography. Abstract: Holography is an efficient, multiplex method of acquiring phase across a whole image. I report on the marriage of holography and scanning microscopy, a new development that improves the speed of micro and nanooptical imaging by orders of magnitude while simplifying the... experiment. I will show the method applied to scanning near-field microscopy with 10nm resolution and confocal imaging with subcellular resolution. We demonstrate coherent post-processing including refocusing. Bio: P. Scott Carney has served as the Director of The Institute of Optics since July 2017. He holds a PhD in Physics (1999) from the University of Rochester and a bachelors degree in Engineering Physics (1994) from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He was faculty at ECE Illinois 2001-2017. Scott has a strong commitment to teaching excellence. He is active in the optics community primarily through the OSA as a journal editor and meeting organizer. He is an entrepreneur and cofounder of Diagnostic Photonics, Inc. His research interests include computed imaging, spectroscopy, and coherence theory.

The next OSA talk is titled "Gravitational waves: opening a new window on the universe" and will be held on November 07 at 7pm at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics(LLE). Dr. Richard O'Shaughnessy from RIT will be delivering the talk. Abstract: LIGO detected ripples in the fabric of the universe -- gravitational waves -- produced when pairs of black holes and a pair of neutron stars coalesced. And after the merging neutron star, we saw a gamma-ray flash, followed by slowly-d...ecaying spot of light. These measurements are transforming our understanding of cosmic phenomena. That's only the tip of the iceberg, though: we'll detect more soon. These ripples will unveil a new window on the universe, giving us access to the most luminous, exotic, and mysterious phenomena in astrophysics. In this talk I'll discuss how Einstein's legacy will enable a new perspective into our universe. See more

OSA Rochester section speaker series brings you the second speaker for the 2017-18 year. Aku Antikainen, Doctoral student, University of Rochester will be delivering a talk on October 24, 2017 at 7 pm. His topic of presentation will be A PERTURBATIVE APPROACH FOR TRANSVERSE MODES OF ELLIPTICAL WAVEGUIDES. A short abstract about the talk: A novel perturbative approach to determine the modes of elliptical waveguides is presented. The method is both simpler than the traditional Mathieu function treatment and superior to all previous approximate methods. The method can be used to determine the propagation constants and modal field profiles to any desired accuracy.
