OSWEGO - More people die in home fires than any other type of fire. People with disabilities and children are most at risk to lose their lives. Did you know that most home fires in America occur in December and January. There are steps that you can take to reduce the risk of a fire in your home. Have a home fire plan that includes smoke and CO detectors, Plug space heaters directly into outlets and keep combustible materials at least 36" away, Keep chimney and vents clear of snow and ice and use flameless candles. #firesafety #fireprevention #getoutalive #smokedetectors #oswegofire

OSWEGO In the event of a poisoning call 911 immediately. Keep chemical products in their original bottles or containers. Do not use food containers such as cups, bottles, or jars to store chemical products such as cleaning solutions or beauty products. Store all medicines and household products up and away and out of sight in a cabinet where a child cannot reach them. Never mix household products together. For example, mixing bleach and ammonia can result in toxic gases. Wear protective clothing (gloves, long sleeves, long pants, socks, shoes) if you spray pesticides or other chemicals. Turn on the fan and open windows when using chemical products such as household cleaners. If unsure what to do contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. #preventpoison #homesafety #oswegofire

OSWEGO - Wearing masks and social distancing help reduce your chance of being exposed to the virus or spreading it to others, but these measures are not enough. Vaccines will work with your immune system so it will be ready to fight the virus if you are exposed. Oswego Firefighters are continuously training to stay prepared for a variety of contingencies. Not only do firefighters have to be prepared, but the equipment we use as well. Ladders and trucks are tested annually as well as fire pumps, breathing apparatus, heart monitors and defibrillators. This week third party services visit Oswego to put our apparatus through their paces to ensure that they pump accordingly and that ladders will support weight in the event that someone was to jump to the ladder. Truck 1 has a 2,000 gallon per minute pumping capacity and Truck 2 a 1,500 gallon per minute capacity. Each engine has the same capacity. All are happy to know that everything passed the grueling tests and stand ready to perform when called upon.

Three out of five home fire deaths result from fires in properties without working smoke alarms! Smoke alarms should be installed inside of every bedroom, outside of every sleeping area in the hallway, and on every level of the home, including the basement. If your alarms are more than 10 years old, replace them. Does your home have enough working smoke alarms to protect your family in case of fire? #oswegofire
