Pace African & Oceanic Art 07.12.2020

This Lobala Prestige Knife is formerly from Merton D. Simpson, an artist, musician, art dealer and historical figure in the New York art scene. Its elegant design typifies knives from this area of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The bladesmith chose a beautiful combination of metals: iron for the blade and brass and copper to enhance the wood handle. In spite of its age, at least 100 years old, it retains its sharp edges. It will cut, as Doug Marcaida would say. For more details please visit our latest online viewing room, The Art of Metal, on our websitelink in our bio.

We are happy to present From the Land of the Flying Masks: Selections from the Thomas G.B. Wheelock Estate. Built according to Tom’s aesthetic principles, his collection encompasses the entire range of Burkinabe’ artistic expression: jewelry, dolls, flutes, figures, staffs, tall altar posts and the most varied and diverse masks. It is by no means an encyclopedic history of Burkinabe’ art but reflects the singular taste and eye of a collector.
