We’d like to thank everyone for all the support over the years and have some exciting announcements to share with you all. . Although the tintype studio is temporarily closed, we're excited to announce that Penumbra has a whole new roster of online classes now open for registration! Over the past few weeks we have been working with our instructors to create new ways to bring our community together for online learning and engagement. . One class we are excited about is a DIY ...Darkroom course taught by Brittonie Fletcher (@etherwaves). Learn how to make "home-brew" developer, Lumen prints, a darkroom suitable for film processing and contact printing, and more. . This course is divided in 4 segments: #1: Camera-less Photography #2: DIY Cameras & Developers #3: Historic Processes #4: Lo-fi Darkroom . We're excited to announce that we have a new shooter in the studio, @actual_sam_dole! Sam is an artist and instructor here at Penumbra Foundation, and has been practicing the wet plate process for a decade! If you've been to any of our travel events, you've probably seen him slinging plates out of our portable darkroom. We’re so excited to finally share this project that we’ve been working on over the last couple months with @nytimes! Our team @geoffreyberliner and @jolenelupo collaborated with Times photographer @heislerphoto to create a series of tintypes documenting the historic Willets Point auto repair district in Queens. With real estate development pending, the business owners, mechanics, and others in this area are living on borrowed time. It was an amazing experience getting to meet... the people who work there, and have a chance to help tell their story. The 19th century wet plate collodion process, was the perfect fit to archive this ages old NYC district and affirms Penumbra Foundation’s mission to maintain historic and analog photographic processes. Thanks to NYT editor, Jeffrey Furticella for making this project a reality, and to Corey Kilgannon and @andreasal06 for their expert reporting and insight into this story. We’re really grateful to have been a part of this project and to have had such an incredible team to work with along the way. It may not be pretty, but this place has always offered hard-working immigrants a shot at the American dream. In the heart of Queens lies one of New York City’s most curious and untamed neighborhoods squalid streets lined with flimsy auto repair shops that bustle with commerce and camaraderie. Willets Point, the largest collection of auto and salvage shops in the city, is surrounded by far more prominent neighbors: Citi Field, La Guardia Airport and the tennis center where the U.S. Open is held. But what has sustained generations of immigrant workers auto mechanics, technicians, repairmen, business owners is being threatened by city officials, who have long considered the industrial area to be an eyesore and a waste of prime real estate.
