In 1998, East New York residents came together to address two mounting issues they saw in their community: a lack of fresh, healthy food and stable jobs. What w...as born from the collective effort is a more than two-decade strong urban farming system, that provides East New Yorkers with fresh, organic foods, employs residents and trains local youth. What are your thoughts on Amazon.com coming to our neighborhood? Will they provide job opportunities for our community? How much is the pay, and will it be worth the hard-worked hours to fulfill orders? Will it provide benefits to its employees to make it worthwhile to sustain and retain the job? How will Amazon's move impact pollution and our health? As a predominantly Black and Brown neighborhood, we are already suffering from environmental racism. Adding on Amazon and its ...network of trucks spewing toxic particles into the air will only further harm our health and environment. How will this affect the existing businesses in our neighborhood? Many mom and pop stores have been suffering from the effects of COVID, rent increases, lack of customers, and retail competition from nearby big box stores and online retail giants such as Amazon. How will it affect housing for the existing residents? Did you see how the neighborhood of Long Island City was transformed in anticipation of the Amazon headquarters? Luxury towers spewed across the neighborhood while causing tenant harassment and displacement of low-income residents and nearby communities. And why is it that Amazon always settles in communities of color? Why is it that they don't settle in affluent neighborhoods?

Our friend Tyrell Anderson, President of the Decay Devils, an amazing preservation advocacy group based in Gary, Indiana, nominated our founder Zulmilena Then for this year's National Trust for Historic Preservation's American Express Aspire Award. And guess what? We won the award! Thanks a million to the Decay Devils for believing and supporting Preserving East New York. And a million thanks to the National Trust for Historic Preservation for recognizing and honoring our wo...rk with this special award. The awesome part of this award is that for the first time, National Trust for Historic Preservation decided to award it to 3 people, Zulmilena Then, Allison Toonen-Talamo, and Melissa Mortimer, all women located in different parts of the country, working in different areas within the preservation field. This year, Preserving East New York turned 5!!! And to celebrate us as kindergarteners during this first week of school, we are sharing 5 photos of some of our beloved East New York treasures that you can use as your zoom virtual background. Show your love for ENY and represent our hood. Click the link below. These are landmark worthy buildings deserving of preservation. They should have been designated during the rezoning process of the neighborhood in 2015 but have been sit...ting vulnerable exposed to the city's hungry speculative demeanor. Working with the community and the city, we hope to gain the landmark designation of these buildings to ensure their longstanding future. ___________________ Este año, Preservando East New York cumplió 5 años!!!

The people in power do not look like us, therefore, they have not favored us. Black and Brown neighborhoods have always pleaded to be heard to the point of exhaustion and we are tired! Black spaces and infrastructure in our communities have struggled to receive protection under landmark laws because New York City has not invested in them. This disinvestment mirrors what is happening locally and nationally with members of the Black and Brown Community. The fact that we exist ...Continue reading
