The Partnership for the Homeless welcomes the guilty verdict in the Chauvin trial, and hopes that it is just the first step toward changing the way that members of law enforcement interact with Black and Brown people. However, we recognize today’s verdict as accountability and not justice. A guilty verdict does not bring George Floyd back. Nor does it bring back the lives of Duante Wright, Adam Toledo and Ma’Khia Bryant. And, it does not undo the systemic racism experienced by people of color, all over our country, in every aspect of their lives, including barriers to safe and affordable homes. Justice is when our societal systems law enforcement, education, housing and so on are underpinned by equity, not racism.

The Partnership for the Homeless stands in solidarity with all Asian American and Pacific Islander communities against the recent surge in hate crimes and violence perpetrated against members of the AAPI communities here in New York City and across our country. Sadly, the true portrait of discrimination against those in our AAPI communities is much broader than the horrendous acts that we have witnessed recently in Georgia, San Francisco, and across our city. Such discrimina...tion continues to exist in housing, healthcare, and employment. We cannot, and should not, tolerate discrimination, bias, and hate in any and all forms, and have signed on to a letter urging President Biden to institute a number of emergency measures to ensure the safety of and provide relief to our AAPI communities. We should accept nothing less. https://docs.google.com//1FAIpQLSf7G9-INovLa6YWM/viewform

International Women’s Day on March 8th is a moment to celebrate both the progress and the potential for women across our city and our world. #internationalwomensday2021 It’s also an opportunity to reflect on the disproportionate impact of housing insecurity and homelessness on women in our city, specifically women of color. In NYC, 91% of families in shelter with children are female-headed. ... 95% of people experiencing homelessness in NYC shelters identify as people of color. This year, about 30% of Black women are behind on their rent they are the group most likely to face rental arrears. Black women in 17 states face eviction at twice the rate as white people. Covid-19 did not create this problem it exposed longstanding inequities. As we work collectively with organizations across the city to get our elected leaders to increase support for homelessness prevention and affordable housing, we are also acting now to ensure women of color and their families do not lose their homes. At The Partnership for the Homeless, we believe homelessness is solvable and the best way to solve it is to prevent it. https://partnershipforthehomeless.org/partner-with-us-on-i/

[O]ur primary focus must be on keeping people in their homes today. The recent federal and state eviction moratoria have shown us that the way to keep people housed is, first and foremost, not to evict them, With more than 1 million New Yorkers unable to pay rent and facing eviction as soon as the moratoria end, the immediate effort should be to avert that crisis, the effects of which would last for years into the future. stated Áine Duggan, President and CEO, The Partn...ership for the Homeless in City Limits https://citylimits.org//cuomos-2021-agenda-should-focus-/

"This is a need that the administration should have prepared for as news about a vaccine broke. As with every other aspect of this pandemic, we need to ensure the health and safety of those who are being temporarily housed in our city's shelters, as well as the staff who work there every day." Gail Cooper, Chief Strategy Officer, Partnership for the Homeless. Congregate living does not allow for social distancing and increases the risk of #COVID19 for residents and staff. The city urgently needs a clear vaccination plan for people living and working in all congregate settings - and should have formulated one months ago. https://queenseagle.com//advocates-urge-nyc-to-release-cle

Attorney General James Provides Guidance to Law Enforcement Group on Evictions During COVID-19 Pandemic As the financial instability spurred by the coronavirus continues, it is imperative for the state to enforce laws that protect New Yorkers from unlawfully losing their homes" Atty General James Important note: Tenants MUST still make a hardship declaration at any point in their eviction process in any language - the declaration indicates financial OR health risk. ... Here's more from the guidance: On December 28, 2020, the COVID-19 Emergency Evictions and Foreclosure Prevention Act of 2020 was signed into law, providing protections for tenants at risk of eviction, including clarification for law enforcement officials carrying out evictions. The law allows tenants to get an automatic stay of eviction in all cases through May 1, 2021 by completing and sending a hardship declaration to their landlord, the court, a sheriff, marshal, or city constable. The law also makes all eviction warrants those currently issued and those that will be issued defective unless they contain specific language referencing the hardship declaration. https://ag.ny.gov//attorney-general-james-provides-guidanc

Partner with us in preventing homelessness. https://tinyurl.com/keeppeopleintheirhomes When you assist a family to pay rental arrears they have accumulated during the COVID-related shutdown, you will create an immediate and powerful impact. ... The donation you make today, no matter how small, will also have a multiplier effect: You will keep more children in school. Less than 50% of children whose families land in shelter graduate from high school. Preventing evictions means fewer interruptions to children's schooling and less chronic absenteeism. You will help to interrupt the generational cycle of homelessness. A key predictor of future homelessness is whether someone spent time in shelter as a child. If families stay housed, less children enter shelters. You will help to save money. At a cost of about $68,000, sheltering a family with children in the NYC homeless shelter system is more than 3x the cost of keeping a family housed in their own apartment for a year. Give today, knowing that you are making a big difference. https://tinyurl.com/donateto-pfthnyc-today Happy New Year from The Partnership family!

The pandemic has exacerbated inequities & increased the need for support for 110K+ NYC students who are experiencing homelessnessyet positions dedicated to this population are sitting empty. The Partnership for the Homeless joins with 30+ organizations to call on New York City Department of Education to quickly, urgently fill these vacancies with the trained professionals who can provide much-needed support to this student population. (Read the full letter here: http://bit....ly/3oJEgsk) While we thank New York City Department of Education for filling 5 of the 20+ positions recently, we urge DOE Chancellor to make it a priority to fully staff the remaining vacancies. No NYC student should struggle to learn because their family is facing housing insecuritythe challenges of finding quiet places to study, logging on to remote classes with WiFi and navigating the uncertainty of the pandemic impact a student's progress. They need specific, targeted, professional supportand they can't afford to wait. Advocates for Children of New York https://www.nydailynews.com//ny-nyc-homeless-school-childr

The best way to solve homelessness is by preventing it... As we look to the challenges in 2021, our congressional leaders must extend eviction moratoria until the pandemic is over, and ramp up rental support to forestall a tidal wave of evictions when renters are unable to pay rent arrears accumulated throughout the shutdown. This roadmap is not about a campaign. It’s about lives and livelihoods and repairing the damage caused by the pandemic and longstanding inequities. It i...s imperative that we work in partnership to create solutions to better position our city to recover and rebuild lives and homes, not just in 2021 but in the years to come. https://www.nydailynews.com//ny-oped-real-solutions-for-ho See more

The Partnership is asking everyone who can to give generously in these last days of the year. With your gift today, more New Yorkers will be able to pay their rent arrears and keep their homes this winter. https://tinyurl.com/keeppeopleintheirhomes As we turn the corner to 2021, more than a million renters won't have enough money for rent on January 1st. Some have been unemployed or under-employed for more than six months. Others have had to stay at home while their children ...attend school remotely. Many owe thousands of dollars and have no idea how they will pay back rent and avoid eviction once the moratorium ends. Your donation will keep people in their homes today and give them a fighting chance in the New Year. https://tinyurl.com/helpNYers If you can, please give generously to those facing so much hardship as this pandemic continues. Plus, for this year only, your donation could allow you to take a charitable deduction of up to $300 (more information) on your taxes. https://tinyurl.com/donateto-pfthnyc-today We at The Partnership wish you and your family a safe, healthy New Year!
