Is it too early to hang Christmas decorations up? Not for Filipinos. Christmas is the most anticipated Holiday for Filipinos - and the onset of the -ber months (Septem/Octo/Novem-BER), ushers in when we begin our preparations to celebrate Christmas and the Advent season. Nothing is more symbolic of Christmas to Filipinos than the beautiful Parol - star-shaped lanterns that adorn homes, churches, and neighborhoods all over the Philippines, as well as Filipinos around t...he world. The parol is an ornate representation of the start of Bethlehem, which guided the Magi and shepherds to the manger of the Baby Jesus. The origins of our parol can be traced back to the Mexican luminaria (illuminated clay-pot lanterns) used by Mexican villagers during their re-enactment of Joseph and Mary’s journey to Bethlehem. However, in the Philippines - during the Spanish/Colonial Era - the parols were initially used to guide and light the way for people as they made their way to church for the nine-day Simbang Gabi (beginning December 16th). Traditional and early parols were made with simple bamboo and papel de Japon, and illuminated with candles or ‘kalburo’ (carbide). These beautiful symbols have developed and evolved into more intricate and lavish iterations, and made with different materials - most notably capiz (mother of pearl). Today the parol is synonymous with Filipinos and Christmas - and you’d be hard-pressed to find a Filipino household without their own beautiful parol during the Holidays.
