SBRT or Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy is a new form of Cancer treatment. With conventional therapy, radiation is delivered in relatively small doses over the course of several weeks, with patients receiving daily treatments during that time. With SBRT, physicians are able to deliver a greater dose of radiation over the course of much fewer treatments.

The Varian TrueBeam system enables a radically different approach to treating cancer. Using image-guided radiotherapy. It integrates imaging and motion management technologies that makes it possible to deliver treatments more quickly while monitoring and compensating for tumor motion, opening the door to new possibilities for the treatment of lung, breast, prostate, head and neck, and other cancers. External radiation therapy is like getting an x-ray. It’s painless and only takes a few minutes. But it takes time to get the machines set up, so it may take 15 to 30 minutes to get each treatment. It’s often given in a walk-in clinic, so you don’t have to be in the hospital.

Using many small doses of daily radiation as opposed to a few large doses helps to protect normal body tissues in the treatment area. Weekend rest breaks allow normal cells to recover. It's very important to have all the scheduled treatments to get the most benefit from therapy.

Proton therapy is a new innovative type of treatment. As of mid-2008, nearly 20,000 patients have been treated in U.S. The first hospital-based proton center opened in 1990 at Loma Linda University Medical Center. Operating proton centers can treat 150-200 patients daily.

Radiation in high doses kills cells or keeps them from growing and dividing. Because cancer cells grow and divide more rapidly than most of the normal cells around them, radiation therapy can successfully treat many kinds of cancer.
