Functional and Structural Scoliosis . //June is Scoliosis Awareness month// - An abnormal lateral spinal curvature is known as scoliosis. BUT not all scoliosis are the same. Let’s discuss one of the most common mistakes that people make when talking about scoliosis. The reason for distinguishing the difference between a functional and structural scoliosis is, because the treatment program is entirely different . Some of the reasons that may cause Functional Scoliosis are f...rom leg length discrepancy, muscle imbalances, or prior surgical history. Frontal line deviation is often seen in this population however in a recumbent position (lying down), it often corrects itself. It’s important to note that there is often no structural deformity within the vertebrae itself . Structural scoliosis, specifically idiopathic scoliosis is of unknown origin and is usually multifactorial. Frontal line deviation is also seen here however, also with axial rotation of the vertebrae and a relative lordotization of the spine due to a phenomenon called relative anterior spinal overgrowth. You will also notice in radiographs, structural deformities within the vertebrae, and the adjacent vertebraes known as wedging. This curvature does not reduce with recumbent position and axial rotation of the vertebraes are seen in trunk flexion position. The lordotization or hypokyphosis may also be seen sagittally at the trunk . Due to the 3 dimensional effect of the spine, the treatment program is complicated and individualized to each person. Depending on the progression risk of the curvature, different factors of treatment approach will be necessary . Mat Pilates - Breaststroke . This is one of Dr. Sam’s favorite mat exercise . All of us need more mid back extension training. Especially now where most of us are on technology more throughout the day.... . Do you feel yourself slumping and being drawn forward? Perform this to strengthen back extensors and scapular stabilizers that are frequently neglected. . Start flat and then tuck pelvis- making your pelvis heavy on the mat to lengthen lower back, draw belly button in, lifting bottom ribs off the mat . Squeeze inner thighs and glutes . Extend up from your mid back (should not feel any tension in lower back) . Starting with hands at shoulders, lift hand of ground having hands and elbows parallel to the ground . Extend arms out straight, rotate open, then bend elbows back to starting position . Make sure to keep shoulders away from your ears, activating through lats and squeezing shoulder blades down as you come around . Improving posture and scapular stability will help with a more efficient run. If you find yourself flexing forward at your trunk while running, your center of mass changes which will also change your stride. Optimal running form is an upright posture with a slight lean forward from the ankles (not the trunk) ............................. Want to add extension work into your routine?
