A complicated forecast exists for Saturday night as a potent storm heads our way bringing ice and flood threats. A strong surge of warm air will be met by cold ...air advancing southward near the international border Saturday night. Temperatures will drop below freezing but warm air will slope over the cold surface keeping the precipitation liquid. ***The biggest hazard is for heavy accumulation of freezing rain. We have issued an ice storm warning from Saturday evening through Sunday afternoon for portions of northern New York. There, confidence in >0.5" of ice on elevated horizontal flat surfaces is high, which will cause power outages and tree damage. Gusty winds Sunday afternoon will enhance potential impacts. In areas where freezing rain is expected but with less accumulation are winter weather advisories. ***A flood watch will go into effect Saturday evening. Rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches in Vermont and 1.5 to 2.5 inches in New York will combine with snow melt to cause a flood risk of smaller rivers and streams. Several mainstem rivers may flood, as well. Continue to monitor the latest forecasts including our webpage https://www.weather.gov/btv/, the NOAA Weather Radio, local officials, and local media outlets.
