The two Northeastern Women’s Golf Association Senior and Super Senior Championship winners brought the experience of numerous club championship victories and one common affiliation to the competition at Columbia: They both play out of Pinehaven. Nan Lanahan, senior champion, and Sandra Weckter, super senior champion, both said being a NEWGA champion far outweighs other individual achievements. This is the biggest win I’ve ever had," Lanahan said. "The level of play and to win in that company of players was awesome. I played with Sue Kahler both days, which is amazing. She’s such a positive influence. Lanahan posted a two-day score of 165 (83-82) to capture the title. Kahler, of Ballston Spa, is a longtime women’s golf champion who won the New York State Women’s Senior Amateur in 2013 and the NEWGA championship in 2019. This was Lanahan’s second year competing in the NEWGA seniors championship, held annually at the end of the group’s competition schedule in September. She won club championships at Western Turnpike, Normanside and Pinehaven prior to earning the senior championship. This year with the COVID I’ve had more rounds than ever, but with less individual competition, Lanahan said. I just took it one hole at a time. I was really focused on dealing with the rain on the second day and doing well by trying to simply make par on each hole. Some good company on this award, she said, pointing to familiar names on the Peggy Enos Memorial Plaque, including the late Audrey VanAlstine, who died in 2013. I miss her still. Weckter won her third straight Louise Starzenski Cup with a two-day score of 191 (94-97). The longtime NEWGA member won club championships at the Willows in Rexford (now Mohawk River), Edison and Pinehaven. When I first started playing competitive golf it was all individual, so I am used to playing my own ball, Weckter said about her lasting success, noting that 1998 was the first year of the super senior championship for players ages 70 and above. The regional seniors competition like many NEWGA events attracted a large field after many individual stroke play events and invitationals were cancelled this year because of COVID-19. Pinehaven is scheduled to play host to the New York State Golf Association women’s seniors next year after the event at the site was canceled in 2020. The championship is scheduled for Aug. 24 and 25. Interclub championship This year’s Interclub championship at Orchard Creek went to the team out of Pinehaven, which earned 26 points in the match-play event. Ballston Spa placed second with 21 points, and Kathy Harkins took overall medalist honors, shooting a 78. Also earning a spot in the finals were Shaker Ridge and Mohawk.
