Food trucks continue to grow in popularity, led by gourmet and specialty offerings. While some communities have encouraged food trucks as a way to promote new businesses, others have identified concerns relating to competition with existing businesses, increased traffic, parking availability, waste disposal, and hours of operation. Food trucks quickly adapted to outdoor dining regulations during the COVID-19 pandemic, but they also faced challenges due to lack of foot traffic in downtown areas and cancellations of festivals and other large events. This session will focus on the different zoning strategies for promoting the good, controlling the bad, and enjoying all that food trucks have to offer. The session will discuss outdoor dining trends and adapting zoning to meet current needs, and provide updates on recent court decisions and regulating competition through minimum distance requirements.
