COMBATING TEEN DRUNK DRIVING Suffolk County Police officers administered sobriety tests to hundreds of Suffolk County high school students today at Police Headq...uarters, but the teens hadn't been drinking; they were wearing alcohol impairment simulation goggles to learn, with a sober mind, how consuming alcohol impairs coordination. The demonstration, which took place during Police Week, is part of the Suffolk County Police Department's ongoing efforts to combat drunk driving. "Many of these students are, or will be, new drivers, so it's a critical time for them to understand the dangers of drinking alcohol and its negative effects on the body’s motor skills, even when they believe they are thinking clearly," Police Commissioner Timothy D. Sini said. "Allowing teens to experience how severely impacted their vision and coordination can become if they are under the influence is an important way to help prevent senseless tragedies caused by impaired drivers."
