In her third year of moving to New York, Buenos Aires-born artist Lucia Fainzilber created her camouflaged self-portrait series Somewear in which she examines the human struggle to find our own identity. Setting my body in front of the camera has been a way of looking at myself in another way, trying to answer all those questions about who we really are. Society, family and the generation we live in, ...make this journey even harder. We camouflage as animals or even soldiers do in order to survive. It’s our way of being inside a system. It’s like a game: if it fits, your vision can be deceived creating almost an optical illusion. Is it possible to isolate our purest self from everything that surrounds us? Somewhere we can find these answers or not. I work within the framework of geometric abstraction, and I investigate the web of connections between painting and the spatial context. Each project is inseparable from the specific space in which it is inserted in each case. The same work can be displayed in multiple different ways, sometimes exploring untypical parts of the wall. I often work in series and with a multiplicity of canvases, which prevents the gaze from converging on a fixed point. Omnipresence is a meditation of Perry-Herrera’s co-creation with nature in this time of climate change. Her large-scale cyanotypes preserved in resin feature trees through the altered seasons. She presents the disappearing seasons of autumn and spring as synonymous to death and birth and equally as precious by seducing the viewer with their delicate, myopic, porcelain-like impressions. Winter, as consistently extending its season, is depicted as a long and farsighted l...andscape, and seeing the forest for the trees. Summer encounters violent storms that cause many young trees to fall before their time. Here, the artist prints the dying tree’s leaves to immortalize their present state. .
