On February 22, 2018, City of Buffalo Mayor Byron W. Brown delivered his State of the City address. Several of us from Premier Consulting were honored to be in attendance. As the City of Buffalo’s self-funded Medical and Prescription consultant, Premier is especially invested in the success of the City, and we were happy to hear Mayor Brown’s optimism that This is Our Time. T he Mayor touched on many achievements and initiatives happening in the City. Included were enhan...ced efficiencies through technology and public-private partnerships, development and job growth, neighborhood recovery, and improved public services and essential services, such as continued firefighter training and a resource center for educational, recreational and vocational programs in the City. Premier partners with the City of Buffalo on Wellness initiatives, so we were especially interested to hear of Project Rainfall, a food system social enterprise at Northland, which will provide fresh produce to the community. Also included in the project are training and employment opportunities for residents, with a focus on health and wellness. The City is also striving toward wellness with reaching the 2018 Bicycle Master Plan goal of installing 150 miles of bike lanes. Premier is proud of its partnership with the City of Buffalo and excited to be a part of the City’s success.

February is Heart Health Month Here’s What We Learned Several members of Premier’s staff recently participated in a Red Cross CPR and AED Certification and Training class. The three-hour course included learning Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). An AED is a portable device that checks the heart rhythm and can send an electric shock to the heart to try to restore a normal rhythm. Training also included what to do i...n a choking situation. We discussed assessing the surroundings for safety, obtaining consent for helping an individual, and to Check the situation, Call for assistance and Care for the person. We took turns practicing what to do in the case of cardiac arrest and what to do if someone is choking. The Red Cross is encouraging as many people as possible to become trained in order to assist in emergencies at home, at work or in public. We learned that waiting for paramedics to arrive to intervene decreases the rate of survival by 10% each minute. This training was interactive, fun and instructive.
