Beginning in the late 1990s with support from American Express, WMF took part in a comprehensive conservation program at the Temple of Hercules and Temple of Po...rtunus in Rome, Italy. Restoration work at both temples included façade conservation, biocide cleaning, stabilization, and conservation of its eroding marble surfaces. Located in the Forum Boarium, these temples are some of ancient Rome’s oldest structures. Today they are an educational resource for those interested in this ancient commercial center. Pictured is Temple of Hercules in the foreground, and Temple of Portunus in the background. More than 100 bungalows in Far Rockaway, the Beach 20 blocks, are, as of yesterday, on New York State's Register of Historic Places! It's fantastic news, and lo...ng in coming. Being on the register is not total protection, and it'd be extremely good if all the bungalows in Beach 20 blocks were included here, but, all the same, the designation is pretty fantastic. See more

Map of the Month: Hooker's Map of the Village of Brooklyn, 1827 This month’s featured map is a reproduction of Hooker’s Map of the Village of Brooklyn in the Ye...ar 1827. The reproduction was made in 1861 for Brooklyn reporter Henry McCloskey’s Manual of the Corporation. Hooker’s map is one of the earliest detailed maps of Brooklyn, showing wards, churches, the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the marshlands of Gowanus, and even Andre Parmentier’s Garden, one of Brooklyn’s earliest botanical gardens.
