On June 24 at 6:00 PM, join Dr. Jeffry Iovannone to examine the lives and work of two queer Buffalonian activists, Jim Zais and Charlie Haynie, through the lens of LGBTQ spaces and historic sites. From the 1960s onward, Zais and Haynie were involved in various social causes including the Civil Rights, Anti=War, and Gay Liberation movements, and their work influenced the course of LGBTQ liberation in Buffalo and beyond. This workshop is free but there is a suggested donation of $10. All contributions directly support PBN's Education Initiatives. Register here: http://bit.ly/RevoMales2021

Mod Mondays are back! Say hello again to Robert T. Coles, who designed this house and studio, built in 1961, for himself and his family. In contrast to the pre-Kensington Expressway houses of the surrounding Hamlin Park neighborhood, the International-style house has a minimal front façade, orienting the lives of its residents away from the noise and traffic of the street and under-construction highway. The one-story portion that does face the street was Coles’s studio, where... clients could visit him, while the two-story living space that sits perpendicular to it is in back for maximum privacy. From the front the building appears nearly windowless, but the studio is lit by a wall of steel-framed windows on its west elevation, and a combination of windows and sliding glass doors make up the living space’s rear elevation, overlooking a sunken rear terrace and tree-shrouded backyard. The house combines prefabricated elements, such as concrete block and modular drywall on wood stud for the walls, with Douglas fir posts and beams. See more

Help us serve the region, click here: https://bit.ly/PBNAnnualAppeal Today is the anniversary of Eliza Quirk's death. Eliza was a famous courtesan, a high-end sex worker, and 72 Sycamore was her "bawdy house". Today we ask that we do not let Eliza Quirk's death be in vain. Invest in PBN, help us save the "little brothel that could" and leave behind the legacy of a "bold bad life" just like Eliza.

Demolition by neglect is one of the most frustrating issues faced by neighborhoods and preservationists. We are proud to be innovating this new legal tool and hopeful it will bring relief to neighbors who shouldn’t have to deal with these kinds of conditions.

We are very excited to share with you that this morning, Judge Carney signed the order designating PBN as the court-ordered receiver for 40 Cottage Street, located within the Allentown Historic District. This will allow PBN to make much needed repairs to a long-time deteriorating property that has been the source of ongoing problems within the Allentown community. While this work will be done as a pilot project, if successful, this will give the City of Buffalo a much neede...d new tool in combatting absentee owners who engage in the harmful practice of demolition by neglect. We are heartened by the City of Buffalo's willingness to engage in working through these issues, as well as Councilmember Nowakowski's tenacity in moving this effort forward. This type of creative advocacy and problem solving would not be possible without the support of our members. Happy New Year! Read more about this here: https://bit.ly/40CottageBN

Help us serve the region, click here: https://bit.ly/PBNAnnualAppeal Katie Moriarity has been a dependable addition to the PBN family since the day she began docenting. A current PBN board member, and founder of our EB Green Tour de Force, she always approaches us with excitement when she pitches fresh new ideas. PBN, like many organizations, is more than just its staff. Our circle of docents, board members, PBN members, and our overall community create the strength that PBN needs to best serve the region. Happy #NationalRegister Birthday to the Allegany Council House! Located on the Seneca Nation of Indians Allegany Reservation in Cattaraugus County, New York, this property is significant at both the local and state levels for its associations with two major twentieth century events in the cultural and governmental history of the Seneca Nation. It served as the primary gathering place for regular meetings of the Seneca Council beginning in 1926. Over the next forty years, the Allegany Council House served as the governmental center of the Seneca Nation. During this time, the building served as the socio-political epicenter for two major, nearly simultaneous Seneca Nation battles: to halt the Kinzua Dam Project and to obtain the right to vote for Seneca women. #alleganycouncilhouse #senecanation

Congratulations to PBN’s own Tia Brown for being selected as a 2020 Oishei Leaders of Color Fellow! The Fellowship, a partnership between The John R. Oishei Foundation and the Rockwood Leadership Institute, brings together nonprofit leaders of color from across the Buffalo-Niagara region to participate in Rockwood’s Art of Leadership intensive training. This is an amazing opportunity and we couldn’t be prouder. Again congrats to Tia and the other 2020 Fellows! https://rockwoodleadership.org/announcing-the-2020-oishei-/

Was yesterday's Common Council Legislative Meeting TLDR? Or in this case watch? Here are the highlights from yesterday’s virtual common council hearing on the proposed Michigan Sycamore Historic District. While Common Council President Darius G Pridgen pledged his support for the nomination and the preservation of the Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor, the application was tabled due to issues with the notices sent to involved property owners. Looking forward we expect the application to be approved at the Legislation Committee’s next meeting on November 4th, and then forwarded to the Common Council for a full vote.
