This was taken about 7 years ago in Jamaica when a couple colleagues and professors at Temple Dental volunteered to fly out for an outreach program, 1000 Smiles Great Shape. It was absolutely the most rewarding and unforgettable experience and gave a realization there are underserved communities in the world with lack of oral care. We commuted every early morning from our resort to Mafoota community centre, but basically used an old shut down school building to serve the... community. The patients traveled miles to form lines everyday, who were instructed to pick only one tooth that was giving them the most pain to receive care because limitless people were in need of help. Yet they were forever grateful. There are many underserved communities in this world with low access to dental care. Patient education and oral care are needed! We should not take anything for granted, even the toothbrush and water we use every morning & night. I miss the young kids we bonded with during our stay and wonder how they have grown to this day. I remember how their smiles and happiness fulfilled every dark corner of the clinics we were working at, even with a toothache, and I hope to make another visit in the next few years. #1000SmilesGreatShape #Jamaica #templedental #externship #volunteer #dentaloutreach #oralcare #dentistry See more

Correct flossing is crucial for EVERYONE. Are you flossing properly? Are you flossing every night, at minimum? ... Dentists know when you skip out on the flossing, or if you’re doing it incorrectly. Don’t be lazy and join the daily program. Remember, your floss needs to go UNDER your gums (like the 2nd photo). Your tooth extends further below the gum line and gets trapped with bacteria and food which you need to floss out. #areyouflossing #dentalfloss #nycdentist #everyday #everynight #flossbrushrinse #drhong #pristinedental #pristinedentalnyc See more

Depending on how wide your smile is others can see your back teeth. Your back teeth may have gold crowns/fillings or ugly porcelain crowns that do not match in color with the rest of your teeth. Have you looked at selfie photos and notice any unaesthetic teeth? Have you ever wondered if they can or need to be replaced? Have you gotten a check up to see if your old crowns are still functional and doing what it’s supposed to be doing? ... Take a selfie or go through your photos. Posted @withregram @beyondthismask This year has definitely thrown a lot of us off from our intended plans. Personally, I had to postpone plans of opening my practice for months until now. However, putting all the negativities aside, there was a moment I came to huge realization when I was sitting through endless Zoom meetings and Netflix. The ability and instincts of human nature to connect and socialize with others is a true gift I never appreciated enough. I always va...lued diversity and the uniqueness of every human being but I was forgetting the actual direct engagement is what helps us learn faster and appreciate more. Behind the actual dentistry and all the clinical details are the connections I as a dentist, can make with each of my patients and office family members. Each and every one of those individuals are different from one another and different from myself. They give me a chance to create unique bondings, share new stories and laughters, learn new cultures and view the world with a wider perspective. I evolve into a more understanding listener, sister and friend of theirs. And it’s because every one is not the same. We are all different. Going back to work couple weeks ago as NYC dental offices reopened felt like I was going to Disney World as a kid. I found myself nonstop smiling (underneath the masks) and felt so much joy and happiness even during the shortest conversations with my dental family. I was truly missing the interactions that could only be created by them, not being home alone. The non-tangible interactions are invaluable and cannot be bought. Working as a dentist is therefore a more rewarding job because it gives me great honor to be regularly approached and surrounded by diverse people. Every patient’s unique personality and story helps me learn about culture, personality, individualism, race, religion and all in all, diversity and I believe there is always at least one feature to learn from someone else to help me grow as a better person and clinician. Being able to learn about the world through people is fascinating and I am lucky to be able to do that through my job. See more

Do you ever take a minute to look inside your mouth? Like your back teeth or tongue at all? Even if you do it’s hard to get a good visual, especially your top back teeth. This photo depicts of a huge black hole on a molar. These don’t form on teeth in one day or even just a few weeks. It takes time, but that does NOT mean to wait it out. The earlier we find and treat cavities, tooth fractures, old leaking fillings, ill-fitting or missing crowns, gum infections, sof...t tissue pathology and more, the less amount of treatment involved, the shorter the treatment time and number of visits and therefore the more affordable it is. The early phases of problematic teeth will often NOT cause pain and that is why routine check ups are crucial. Do not delay your dental checkups and do not wait until you feel something. EARLY DETECTION is key!!! When are you due for your check up and cleaning? See more

Smiles can do a lot. It’s not always easy to bring out a smile when you had a long stressful day, but if you can crack one out, you’ll actually feel better. We all know smiles can bring happiness and joy. It makes us feel good and is an infectious loop of happiness because when we see someone smile, it brings a smile on us too. They are so powerful that studies say even fake smiles can help us boost our mood and happiness level. The action of smiling releases happy ch...emicals like endorphins, serotonin and dopamine. These natural chemicals all help to relax your body which ultimately leads to more benefits on your overall health. The relaxed state of human bodies help our immune system to function effectively. It will also lower your blood pressure and stress level. The attractiveness and productivityat work is another big one. Studies show that people who smile regularly appear more confident, and are more likely to be promoted, and are more likely to be approached. The performance level at work goes up and make you feel successful. Smiling will also help you look younger and more attractive as the facial muscles get lifted, kind of like a face lift! As you read this put a big, warm, real smile on your face. And smile every time you think of it! Be honest and ask yourself. Do you follow this everyday? I hope you are Bacterial microorganisms naturally live in your mouth and they will sit on every surface and get snugged in every tight space as possible. That is why brushing at least 2x/day 2min each is crucial. Some patients tend to brush very hard thinking that will get rid of the plaque easily. This is not true! It is not the intensity but the DURATION of toothbrushing that matters. ... 1Grab your soft-bristle manual or electric toothbrush 2Gently brush each quadrant (upper right/left & lower right/left) for 30seconds, which adds up to a total of 2minutes *Each 30seconds of quadrant brushing should cover the 1)outside (the sides you see when you smile) 2) the inside (opposite side where it faces your palate or tongue) 3) chewing surfaces. Never get too comfortable. When you’re comfortable, you stop growing, and in my field of dentistry, you have to always be learning and always be growing. I spent the quarantine period with endless online lectures, continuing education courses, dental cases shown on a variety of platforms, dental journals & publications, discussion groups sharing the concerns of how this pandemic may affect dentistry, how infection control will have to change and the list goes on and on. Denti...stry is also advancing in technology rapidly and we cannot be sitting in our rocking chairs without trying to adapt or avoiding the changes. I learned new cool approaches & products and what specialists were delivering outside of general/restorative dentistry. I am so motivated to go back to work and ready to achieve newly added goals. I tried my best to stay positive during these at-home times and I was able to see a silver lining. I am ready to come back stronger and be that one dentist who can give it all. Hope to see everyone soon. #staypositive #alwayslearning #advancing #staymotivated #neverstaycomfortable #dentistry #nycdentist #drjoanna See more

I’ve been getting more lethargic and apathetic during the lockdown. I think there was definitely a day I had a mental breakdown as I sat on my couch and looked out the window. There were so many unknowns I wish I had the answers to. But no one will ever know what the future will bring and I will have to just wait and see. These are frustrating and hard times for everyone. As other states of the nation are slowly reopening, I wish the best luck for every individual for wha...tever new challenges they m have to face. As NYC is nearing Phase 1 of reopening, we must keep in mind to continue the safety and precautionary measurements. We are not going back to normal but entering a new norm and we need to slowly adjust to it. As we approach this day, let’s try to #staypositive and #staymotivated. I tried to stay busy with online dental courses, lectures, case studies, product reviews etc to improve my knowledge but there came a day when I couldn’t do more. I’m sharing a few small things that kept me sane. They are things I didn’t think of much prior to mid March, but I appreciate these small chores and tasks more now.
