I’m starting a South Asian Women Therapy Group (see attached flier for details). Many South Asians feel lost and isolated in this current social climate and because of the model minority myth, many don’t feel like they have a voice to express their feelings of otherness and how to handle their own internalized racism. In addition, talking to their immigrant parents of a different generation isn’t easy or welcomed, especially for South Asian women. Many get labeled and dismissed as angry and too much. In addition to race, the group will be a safe place to explore other common struggles. This group’s focus will be to build community and feel less alone in processing what it means to identify as South Asian in the US and across the globe.

Coronavirusonlinetherapy.com is an online therapy website to help those on the front line during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many therapists, including myself, are offering free and low cost therapy to these HEROES - everyone who puts themselves at risk to show up everyday and take care of us. You’ve focused on how to take care of yourself physically, but how about taking care of yourself mentally? It’s natural to worry and even panic during this time. We have been given a checklist to ensure our physical safety during this pandemicmasks, gloves, wiping down, social distancing, staying inall of these speak to the ways to ensure that we don’t get physically sick. However studies are showing that if this is our sole focus, we will suffer emotionally during this c...hallenging time. If you overly worry and even worse, catastrophize as a way of dealing with the current crisis, it can negatively impact your immune system, and thus conjoining the mental and the physical. If we compromise our brains, we compromise our bodies. During this time it’s important to find ways to take care of our minds. Just like we have a tool box for our physical health, we need a similar one for our emotional well being. This is not an easy task, especially for those of who have used anxiety as a way of coping with life. Now more than ever it’s absolutely necessary to take care of our mental health. If you are interested in learning more about how to strengthen your emotional and mental well being, please reach out to a mental health provider. Although these activities can be done solo, they are much more effective when you learn these tools while working with a safe and knowledgeable mental health professional. Currently many therapists are offering Telehealth sessions and insurance companies have relaxed their requirements, making mental health support more accessible to all in need.
