This week at PTS, we have a project in Far Rockaway, New York that highlights the versatility of helical piles. Normally, once H-piles or timber piles are driven into place, it becomes a challenge if they are not installed in their proper locations. This is not true for helical piles. If a redesign is necessary mid-construction, helical piles can easily be removed and installed in another location. For this project, due to a design change, the locations of 6 helical piles tha...t were previously installed had to be relocated with the engineer of record’s approval. This week at Premium Technical Services, we take a look at a residential project in Suffolk County, NY. A celebrity was looking to reside in a scenic area of Long Island, with that in mind, they chose to build a new home overlooking the Atlantic Ocean in Montauk. Since the property chosen by the celebrity was located in a FEMA designated flood zone, the dwelling was required to be designed to protect against possible flooding and storm surge. As per that design, FSR was contr...acted to install 80 MacLean Power Systems (MPS) helical piles, consisting of 1.5 round corner square shaft (RCS) leads combined with 2.875 diameter pipe extensions. The site presented installation challenges due to its extremely varied elevations from the front to the back. This necessitated the use of specialized installation equipment; fortunately, FSR was able to easily provide the required installation equipment from their vast fleet. Once the pile locations were laid out on the site it became apparent that several piles were located on top of the existing retaining wall. The Engineer of record was consulted and the piles were relocated to a more suitable location. All of the helical piles were successfully installed over the course of two phases, the first phase was for the new residence, and the second phase was for the new retaining walls. This week at Premium Technical Services, we take a look at a project in Manhattan, a brownstone apartment building on W 84th Street. The only way to access the site was through a 36 wide doorway at the front of the building. FSR, with their vast selection of helical pile installation equipment, was able to quickly put their Bobcat MT 100 walk-behind into action, enabling them to access the rear yard and install the helical piles. 10 MacLean Power Systems (MPS) helical piles,... consisting of 1.5 round corner square shaft (RCS) were to be installed to an average depth of 22’. During the installation, some large rock formations were encountered, causing difficulties with the pile’s penetration. With some quick thinking and several discussions with the engineer of record, FSR modified the helical lead sections, allowing them to bypass the obstructions and achieve the desired depth. Several piles were installed to the top of bedrock as shown on the soil borings. This week at Premium Technical Services, we take a look at a project in Queens, NY, the Broad Channel Athletic Club (BCAC). In the aftermath of Super Storm Sandy, the BCAC was ravaged by floodwater and its facilities were in disrepair. As a part of the NY Rising Community Reconstruction Program, the BCAC was required to build a new two-story storage building for the sporting equipment that was going to be used by the club and the neighboring American Legion. In Broad Channel,... the soil below the surface is typically very weak, hence the requirement for a deep foundation system using MacLean Power Systems (MPS) helical piles. FSR was contracted to install 24 1.75 RCS shaft MPS helical piles, however, when tested in the field, they were not performing as expected. FSR worked with the engineers at H2M to develop a solution using a different configuration. This week at Premium Technical Services, we take a look at a project in Jersey City, NJ, One Evertrust Plaza. The project was for the construction of a new concrete floodwall to protect the multiple generators that power the building. On site, there were many underground obstructions making other types of piles unsuitable for the location. MacLean Power Systems helical piles were chosen by Ratto Construction to bypass the gas lines, sewer lines, and more without issue. Furthe...r, the job site was less than 6 feet from concrete sidewalks, which were left completely undisturbed due to the piles’ vibration-free installation. The construction of the floodwall called for a portion of the helical piles to be battered in order to counter any lateral loads that possible floodwater and debris could exert on it.
