"As I looked out of the window on this freezing cold winter morning, my thoughts turned to Tu B’Shvat and the sharp contrast of this winter day with the celebration of trees & their produce. The inherent message of celebrating Tu B’Shvat at this point of the year, when the trees are still frosted and no leaves or fruit are growing, seems to me - working at PUAH - quite obvious. The message is this: that growth happens below the surface, where no-one can see it.... I am constantly awed by the courageous people who are struggling to have a child and are still in the 'Winter', almost 'Spring' stage. I am humbled by the tremendous amount of time and effort each one invests to have a baby. I take comfort in prayers and Hashem’s gentle messages to us, reminding us that the process may not be simple or clear, but that there will be fruits. This Tu B’Shvat as we celebrate the birthday of the trees, let us celebrate the blessings Hashem has given us in medicine, guidance and understanding to build a family- and let us be mindful of the people still in the process. QUESTION: "**I am 35 years old and in the 9th week of pregnancy. My doctor asked if we wanted to do an amniocentesis due to my age, and I didn’t know how to respond. Please advise. Thanks!"** ANSWER: ... B'shaah Tovah! An amniocentesis does pose a potential risk to the pregnancy and therefore must be considered carefully on a case by case basis. Although age is certainly one factor in the decision making, it also depends on the results of the ultrasounds and blood tests. Assuming the ultrasound and blood tests are all normal, we generally recommend NIPT and avoid the amnio. NIPT (Noninvasive prenatal tests) doesn’t test for as many chromosomal defects as amniocentesis, but it does screen for the most common fetal chromosome anomalies: trisomy 21 (Down syndrome), trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome) and trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome).
