The Brooklyn College Dream Team, The Dominican Student Movement (MEDO), The Mexican Heritage Student Association (MEHSA), The Brooklyn College Puerto Rican Alliance (PRA), Young Progressives of America at Brooklyn College, and members of the Brooklyn College campus community strongly condemn the racist and xenophobic statements made by professor of computer science Rohit Parikh targeting Hispanics on a public Facebook post on July 9, 2018. His comments threaten Brooklyn Colle...ge establishing itself as a sanctuary college and the undocumented population residing in the College. Professor Parikh believes that everyone who is illegally here should be deported, which calls for the deportation of our own colleagues. Professor Parikh also discriminates when he diminishes the Hispanic population which is the third largest group on campus, in labeling them as dropouts, saying are they really the population which America needs for the rest of this century when more and more education is required? alluding that the US needs less Hispanic individuals. This creates a hostile and unsafe environment for Hispanic and undocumented students and staff which threaten the values of Brooklyn college. He ignorantly makes the assumption that all Hispanics are Mexicans and that they are undesirable immigrants. This was brought to our attention by a member of the Brooklyn College community who is scared for themselves and the campus community. They also cited fear of retaliation for speaking out. These comments, following those of Mitchell Langbert’s are the latest in a series of public comments by professors indicating a problem of discrimination at CUNY, that puts the safety of students at risk. Please join us Tuesday, October 23rd at 1pm on the East Quad to protest Professor Parikh’s horrific attacks on students. Brooklyn College states to be against Hate- we must hold them accountable. We are organizing a protest next tuesday against Professor Parikh’s comments and demanding action be taken by the Brooklyn college administration.

On Wednesday, June 17th we, the Puerto Rican Alliance at Brooklyn College, submitted a collectively-written Letter of Demands to President Michelle J. Anderson. In this letter, we demanded resolutions to many of the same issues we’ve discussed with the Brooklyn College administration for more than three years. Above all, we demand action. Brooklyn College has, for years, been aware of manyif not allof the racially motivated and police violence issues on campus. We demand the College do more to protect, and support all of it’s Black, Indigenous, Afro-Latinx, Latinx and Students of Color.

On Tuesday, June 2, 2020, President Michelle J. Anderson released a statement which lacked a clear message of support, concern, and any true commitment to acting upon the conditions that inform the experiences of BLACK, INDIGENOUS, AFRO-LATINX, LATINX, AND STUDENTS OF COLOR at Brooklyn College. Given the documented h...Continue reading

A history of police brutality and violence in Brooklyn College?! It’s more likely than you think! FOR YEARS @bklyncollege411 has known about cops (including Public Safety officers) abusing their power, spying on students, and much more. But they’ll water it down by promoting The Vanguard Years, the years of struggle which were beautifully documented while students fought to establish the Africana Studies and Puerto Rican and Latino Studies departments. These are the same de...partments the school refuses to fund. Instead, Africana Studies has had a hiring freeze for more than five years and PRLS only got an additional line after the students begged FOR THREE YEARS STRAIGHT. IT’S TIME TO DO SOMETHING. If you want our professors to lead your diversity and inclusion Town Halls, then you will fund our departments and protect our Black and Brown professors, students, and staff. Brooklyn College’s actions seem to be racist! We want our departments FUNDED! WE WANT THE NYPD OUT! Stop profiting from the BLM movement and DO SOMETHING. #BLM #RacistBC #BrooklynCollege #NYPDOutOfBC

51 years ago our club was created because a group of Black and Puerto Rican students wanted change in Brooklyn College. While our mission has always been the same, our goals have changed over time. Today we are not in need of establishing a department, or a space to come together and talk about our experiences as (im)migrants or first/second/third/etc. generation children of (im)migrants. Because of this, we feel our logo should be updated to show our growth. This upcoming academic year our goals will be: (1) to continue providing an open space for all to come together, (2) to keep our departments alive so that other can learn about our history and become accomplished individuals within academic and non-academic spaces, (3) to continue fighting for what is right--always.
