On Wednesday November 11th, our Nation will commemorate Veterans Day. This year Port Washington’s American Legion Post 509 will mark the occasion with a car parade followed by the traditional Veterans Day Service at 11 AM at the Sousa Bandshell located at Sunset Park. The membership of the Port Washington Fire Department will join with American Legion Post 509 and honor their fellow members that have proudly served and continue to serve in Armed Forces of our great Nation. T...he car parade will begin at Campus Drive at 10am and will proceed to the Sousa Bandshell via Main Street. The Chief Officers of the Department encourage everyone to line Main Street and show their gratitude and support for these brave men and woman that have answered the call to the colors and served with honor, bravery, dignity and pride in the United States Military. The Port Washington Fire Department encourages everyone to change your battery in your smoke alarm and Carbon Monoxide detectors. "Change your clock, change your smoke alarm battery" is an annual fire safety campaign promoting the importance of working smoke alarms. Smoke alarms provide a vital early warning signal in the event of a fire. People don't realize that when they are asleep they can't smell smoke. That's why smoke alarms are essential to ensure people sleeping in a house wake up and evacuate if a fire breaks out. A good time to remember to check your smoke alarm and change the batteries is when you change your clocks twice a year as Daylight Savings Time begins and ends. Prepare and practice an escape plan! Crawl low under smoke. Plan where to meet outside. Once you're out, stay out! Remember, smoke alarms save lives.

Yesterday, Congressman Suozzi met with members of several volunteer fire departments that He had helped secure nearly $850,000 collectively in funding through FEMA’s Assistance for Firefighters Grant Program (AFGP). These awards will enhance firefighter safety and improve emergency services to our communities. The Port Washington Fire Department received an AFGP grant of $288,000 for 50 portable radios, one of the most important tools in a firefighter’s arsenal. Providing a dependable portable radio to each crew member entering a building can represent the difference between life and death for these firefighters and first responders. The department had also received a grant for $90,000 for personal protective equipment needed to keep members safe while treating patients with suspected COVID. Thank you Rep. Tom Suozzi
