COVID-19 Variants of Concern There is a concern that the uptick of COVID-19 cases are reflective of the variant strains of the virus circulating here in the United States. Viruses constantly change through mutation, and new variants of a virus are expected to occur over time. Sometimes new variants emerge and disappear. Other times, new variants emerge and persist.
