Come in from the heat or make the most of a rainy day by playing some board games. But READ THE DIRECTIONS! Playing board games builds and reinforces a myriad of academic and social skills. But think about the added benefits of actually reading the directions: * Readers encounter unknown and troublesome vocabulary and use context to develop meaning. * Readers will need to self monitor - they have to check for understanding in sections, reread to clarify, try out what they... understand and then possibly go back to the directions again. * Readers must retain information to carry forward to understand what comes next. Of course, the "soft skills" are just as important: * Taking turns * Fair play * Competition with empathy * Perseverance * Strategy and planning Take advantage of the slower pace of summer, enjoy family time and read some directions. Have fun! If you are interested in summer reading tutoring, send me a message! Alison Farrell, Reading Specialist

ARE YOUR BOOK SHELVES LOADED BUT LONELY? We've had a beautiful start to our summer break! I hope you're starting to come down from school and work stress and that kids are beginning to detach from their chrome books. Now it's time to get books into everyone's hands. Beautifully ordered and color coded book shelves are nice to look at but how often are those books read? Get messy and leave books out for easy access. Rotate titles or keep favorites around. Create some noo...ks that invite reading without the interruption of internet. If you are looking for some new titles for young readers in your home, try this website for ideas. https://www.barbarathebookworm.com Enjoy this beautiful start to our summer. Relax and Read! If you are looking for extra tutoring support for your young readers and writers, leave me a message and I'd love to talk with you.
