Celebrating Court Reporting and Captioning Week kicked off with the Student Forum yesterday. 67 students and several board members of NYSCRA attended. The president of NCRA Debbie Dibble was the first speaker. Her tip: To offset nerves before taking a test, take a couple of M&Ms to retrain the brain to enjoy the sugar and not be nervous. Another tip from the next speaker, Lisa S. Webb, was about time management, and how you need to achieve a work/life balance. Lauren Schecte...r, a CART provider, explained the work of captioners and CART providers and what the difference was between the two kinds of captioning. The last speaker was Christine Smith, who is a student currently but has been a scopist for working reporters for many years. Her tip: Learn and use the features and functions of your software. It was truly a remarkable two hours filled with a lot of information for all the students that attended. See more

On December 30, 2019, I gave a realtime presentation at Local 1070 DC 37 in NYC to Criminal Court and Family Court Reporters. It was inspirational to see the enthusiasm from these reporters who were dedicated to improving thier realtime skills. We reviewed how to use StenEd's "10 Steps to Realtime Writing" and how to prepare for the NYRCR and NYACR exams. The attendees also took dictation of practice test material for Q&A and Jury Charge. A few attendees had recently passed the Supreme Court test and were excited about when they would be able to start that part of their career. Good luck to all those who are willing to work hard to improve their craft as a professional court reporter.
