After over twenty years of exploring movement professionally, I have come to understand that it isn’t the biggest backbend or the longest handstand that shifts things for you. It is more like: Can you move each vertebra equally well in all directions? (Or do you hinge from one or two points in the spine)... Can you move your arm from your shoulderblade? (Or do you primarily use your chest or neck) Can your foot create an arch AND flatten well? (Or does it stay locked in one or the other direction) Can you feel your breath in 360 of your ribs and diaphragm? (Or do you possibly not your lower ribs moving at all?) When we move well, all the joints of the body contribute their share to the tasks at hand. When one or more joints stop contributing (because of injury, repetitive habits, traumas, etc.) the body loses options. When we run out of options, as one of my mentors says that’s a bad day. Giving our body new movement options isn’t usually done by making bigger movements, it’s done by slowing down and consciously stepping out of old patterns. From the vaults (2009)! Not many people know before I dove into yoga and all forms of movement as medicine I was a dancer! I grew up dancing, got my BFA in dance, and headed to Philly to pursue breakin’, house, and other street styles. Hip hop and house music were my refuge in my twenties and thirties and living in Philly and then NYC I would go out dancing all night then wake up and teach yoga the next day. Unfortunately injury halted my dance career but it catapulted me i...nto trying to understand the body and all its complexity. It was a magnificent blessing in disguise. Today as a mom and as someone who has studied sleep I go to bed at 9 rather than out to the club at 11 (but if the music is right you can still catch me til the sun comes up on a rare occasion I just feel it for a week after! ) however the love of movement and music still runs in my veins. I have dreams to collaborate with some of my dance colleagues at recenter space in the future. As things build, I will make those dreams a reality! #movementismedicine #practicelife
