Red and Company 01.07.2021

I just launched a new website for my design studio Red+Company. The site includes web, branding, and book design work from the past year, as well as an updated blog. In spite of the pandemic and election it's been a busy year, with some exciting new projects of my own on the horizon.

An image and paragraph (below) I posted four years ago as part of a blog piece. Hopefully we can put this chapter behind us now. The original poster had, where Donald Trump's name is, the German word "Frauenstimmrecht," which translates as the right for women to vote. The idea of the 1946 poster is that if you gave women the ability to vote there would be a dangerous slippery slope: women would no longer stay at home and tend to the children and, before long, flies would be l...anding on abandoned pacifiers. + So I took one of the vintage posters from my blog post yesterday (on the women’s suffrage movement in Switzerland) and ran it through photoshop. Hopefully Herr Donald Brun won't mind my repurposing his art, used in 1954 as part of the NO campaign, for a new life on the right side of history.

I was thrilled to go on press yesterday at Linco Printing in Long Island City while they ran 30,000 copies of a publication I designed pro bono for The Whitman 2019 Consortium, a collection of over 50 cultural institutions around the country celebrating Whitman’s bicentennial. My own project, a national public reading of Whitman’s poem Crossing Brooklyn Ferry (www.HappyBirthdayWaltWhitman.com), is among those included in the publication. Keep your eyes peeled for an extraor...dinary collection of productions, lectures, poetry readings, exhibitions, and more happening throughout 2019 many in New York City and Philadelphia, but others also in Rhode Island, New Jersey, DC, Los Angeles, and online. Here's a list of the Consortium members: Brooklyn Poets Whitman at 200: Art and Democracy Parachute Literary Arts Brooklyn Historical Society Brooklyn Public Library Gowanus Dredgers Louisiana Landmarks Society The Morgan Library & Museum UCLA Paula Kimper The Dessoff Choirs Grolier Club The Green-Wood Cemetery The Long Island Museum Poets House The Academy of American Poets The Bowery Boys The Cecilia Chorus of New York Folger Shakespeare Library Federal Hall National Memorial Fort Greene Park American Opera Projects The Library of Congress New York University Stony Brook University Soka Gakkai Intl USA Providence Athenæum Walt Whitman Birthplace Association PostClassical Ensemble Poetry Society of America OutHistory.org Happy Birthday, Walt Whitman! Another recent project I worked on recently, this one with the award-winning photographer Sophie Gamand for the design and production of her coffee table book Pit Bull Flower Power. I'm still in awe of her Kickstarter campaign for the project, which raised close to $175,000 on a goal of $55,000. It’s a testament to the passion of animal lovers who care, as Sophie does, about rescuing pit bulls from shelters and educating the public about them.
