SERVE ALL THINGS AS THEY ARE In the end, what we are left with is our own generosity, or lack of it. All other goals are burned away by time. Oscar Wilde once s...aid that everything ugly starts off wanting to be beautiful, whereas everything beautiful starts off wanting to be useful. This has been a hard lesson for me to learn, particularly in my life as an artist, where I have wasted a lot of time trying to be beautiful, as it were, and stand out that way, rather than simply trying to be of service. Sometimes it hurts my feelings that a song I spent years working on goes unnoticed, whereas a few words about self-love that took me five minutes to write reach many more people. But I try not to take it personally and remind myself that if what people need are words about self-love, that’s the way things are, and I am determined to serve all things as they are. The Buddha said that all our worldly desires fame, praise, pleasure, money are like a house on fire, and the only way to save the contents of that house are to turn those desires into generosity. What isn’t given away is lost. You can make your life about getting a good job or relationship or reputation, but time will take all those things away, and if you haven’t found a way to turn them into a way of helping others, all you will be left with is bitterness and sorrow. And yet, if you stop asking what the reward of generosity is and understand that generosity is always its own reward, you will find that you are as rich as a king or queen. The more you give, the more you have to give. In the end, we always play both sides. So never be envious when you see someone with a relationship or opportunity you don’t have. They will be separated from all that is dear and appealing to them. Focus your strength on this moment and what you have to give to it: your care, your attention, the unique beauty of your pure presence.
