Clearly we give our socks a good workout in this family because these giant holes are a common feature across the board. I find this method quick and effective. I use a thick wool yarn so it can felt up in the wash. The hole is filled by sewing the edge with a blanket stitch and then keep following round by stitching into the top stitch of the previous row. As I pull the needle through the sock, I hold the sock down on that area with my thumb because I can control the tension. As you get closer to the middle, start skipping one or two stitches per round so you decrease the number of the stitches. The trick to this mend is creating an optimum tension, not too tight and not too loose. There will be holes, but the felting process will help fill those up, that’s why the wool thread is important, best beloved. The wool thread is quite tough to sew with but with gentle pulls on the needle, you’ll find your method. I find this a very comfortable wear both before and after washing. If you fuzz up, it’s not tragic. The felting covers a multitude of sins.
