Alcohol may be man's worst enemy, but the Bible says love your enemy." ~ Frank Sinatra Hey I’m Rich, Bartender at Repeal XVIII, and I’m happy to participate in Bartender Appreciation day as long as its called that and not national mixologist day. Patrons stop me here and there and tell me I’m a mixologist. It’s a flattering acclamation on their part because I know what they’re saying is that they like their drink but I always make it a point to correct them. I am a bartend...er first and a mixologist second. In my experience a self proclaimed mixologists makes drinks for themselves, even if the drink is for someone else. Bartenders provide people with the best overall experience, not just the best drink. Like church, bars are a sacred place because the best experience doesn’t always mean the same thing for everyone. On a bad day someone may want a stiff drink while they sit there silently. On a good day the same person may want to talk of their accomplishments over a beer. We go to the bar to be together, alone, to celebrate, mourn, laugh, and cry. Like a barber the bartender has been a long held member of the family not the mixologist. I’m proud to be a bartender. Many of my best friends were made while doing this for a living, I’ve found joy in making people happy, and at the end of the day I need to make great cocktails to justify my affinity for drinking alcohol. At the end of the day what I love most is bartending has given me the opportunity to connect with people. I get to see them and practice listening by making sure that when they speak I’m there in the moment with them and I think it’s made my life better in every way.
