Rescue Mission of Utica 11.05.2022

The Fierce Struggle Our struggle is . . . against the powers of this dark world. Ephesians 6:12... Today's Scripture & Insight: Ephesians 6:1020 In 1896, an explorer named Carl Akeley found himself in a remote section of Ethiopia, chased by an eighty-pound leopard. He remembered the leopard pouncing, trying to sink her teeth into my throat. She missed, snagging his right arm with her vicious jaws. The two rolled in the sanda long, fierce struggle. Akeley weakened, and it became a question of who would give up first. Summoning his last bit of strength, Akeley was able to suffocate the big cat with his bare hands. The apostle Paul explained how each of us who believe in Jesus will inevitably encounter our own fierce struggles, those places where we feel overwhelmed and are tempted to surrender. Instead, we must take our stand against the devil’s schemes and stand firm (Ephesians 6:11, 14). Rather than cower in fear or crumble as we recognize our weakness and vulnerability, Paul challenged us to step forward in faith, remembering that we don’t rely on our own courage and strength but on God. Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power, he wrote (v. 10). In the challenges we face, He’s only a prayer away (v. 18). Yes, we have many struggles, and we’ll never escape them by our own power or ingenuity. But God is more powerful than any enemy or evil we’ll ever face. Our Daily Bread Reflect & Pray What fight are you (or someone you love) facing right now? How is God inviting you to stand firm in His strength and fight? God, the fight is real. The evil is real. I don’t know what to do, but I’m trusting You and Your mighty power to be with me

All Authority Comes from God Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God (Romans 13:1 nlt). God establishes governments. And those who are in powerpresidents, vice presidents, senators and congressmen, governors, mayors, or whatever their roles arehave been placed there by God, whether you voted for them or not.... We’re living in politically charged times, with disagreements over so many issues. Yet God has put government in place. Romans 13:1 tells us, Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God (nlt). When Paul wrote these words, he was living under Roman jurisdiction. Rome was running the known world for the most part, and Caesar Nero was in charge. Now, some Caesars were worse than others, but Nero was probably the worst of the lot when it came to persecuting the church. Nero hunted down Christians. He executed them. He tortured them. He fed them to animals to entertain people in the Coliseum. Yet Paul wrote, Those in positions of authority have been placed there by God. That’s pretty radical for Paul to say. I’ve had the opportunity to go to the White House and pray for the president on more than one occasion. And afterward, some people criticized me for it. But why would I not want to pray for the leader of the free world and ask God to guide and direct him? I feel it’s my responsibility. I also think that when we isolate ourselves and allow ourselves to become so partisan in the way we view things, we’re not thinking like Christians. Don’t think like a political pundit; think like a follower of Jesus Christ. We’re part of the kingdom of God. And as representatives of Jesus Christ, we should seek to influence everyone with the message of the gospel. That includes those who are in positions of power.

The Presence of Humility November 5, 2020 The angel went to her and said, Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you. (Luke 1:28)... One of the greatest character qualities you can possess is humility. If you see good character in yourself, then you will be humble about it. Nothing will take you lower than pride, and nothing will lift you higher than humility. In this message, we are going to take a look at Mary, the mother of Jesus, and how she was an amazing picture of humility. What made her most blessed and most favored was not just that she was the mother of the Son of God, it was that she was incredibly humble. As we study this story, we are going to see time and time again how God places a supreme value on the sublime virtue of humility. We enjoy the greatest blessings of life today because of a woman who did not go as high as she could, but who got as low as she could; and because she went as low as she could, she went higher than any woman ever before or since. The first time we meet Mary, an angel of God is speaking to her. If you had walked by this girl before the angel had spoken to her, you wouldn’t have given her a second look. She was an average young girl, born to the lower-class, from a peasant’s town, in a poor region of Israel, engaged to a minimum wage laborer. She wasn’t a movie star, a beauty queen, or a rich socialite. Furthermore, Mary was not even a full-grown woman. She was a teenager. Here was a nobody girl, living in a nothing town in the middle of nowhere, and face-to-face with an angel. I’m sure she wasn’t expecting to hear him say that of all the women on earth she enjoys a special favor of God and the special presence of God in her life. So you can certainly understand her confused response. In effect, Mary said to this angel, You talking to me? Are you sure you don’t have me confused with someone else? It never occurred to her that she would be the mother of God’s son. Mary would have never chosen herself; she can’t believe God had. In this, we see a great picture of her humility. Humility is not thinking higher of yourself than you should; it’s really not thinking of yourself at all. Mary did this so well, and we should all be striving to follow her example. Dear Lord, I want to portray the same kind of humility Mary did. I want to be your servant in whatever way I can so that you can be glorified and so that other people will come to know you. Grant me opportunities to learn humility and continue to develop a humble spirit within me so that I might honor you. In Jesus’ name, amen. Joyce Meyer Ministries
