REX's Shenzhen Opera House 1.0 and 2.0 proposals pioneer the vertically-stacked performing arts complex as a new typology. The key challenge was proving unequivocally the feasibility of vertical transportation, egress, structure, constructability, and enclosure. Our close collaboration with some of the world's leading experts at Arup (Fire/Life Safety, MEP, Vertical Transport), Magnusson Klemencic Associates (Constructability, Structure), and Front (Facades) allowed us to achieve this feat and prove the viabilityand high-performanceof all these key systems. Our Shenzhen Opera House proposal was developed further for the final round of competition. Addressing the jury's comments, SOH 2.0 maximizes use of the site and splits the SOH 1.0 tower into two iconic buildings to soften the design. The former below-grade cultural center is elevated to create an at-grade Gallery covered with a 189 m x 189 m canopy, visually integrating the architectural public realm with a park both active and contemplative. In contrast to the increasingly stylized auditoria shapes that prioritize trend over performance, Shenzhen Opera House’s halls are contemporary interpretations of the pure geometries of historic precedents. The Opera Hall emulates the acoustic richness of the Teatro Colón and the clean lines and acoustic intimacy of the Wiener Staatsoper. The Concert Hall aspires to what has never been achieved before: a true marriage of the acoustically superior ‘shoebox’ shape of the Wiener... Musikverein with the experientially preferred ‘vineyard’ seating of the Berliner Philharmonie. Thank you to Theatre Projects and Threshold Acoustics for their intelligence as we crafted these spaces.
