Dear Residents of Syracuse University, The Residence Hall Association would like to publicly address an incident that we have become aware of via social media. According to various sources, on Wednesday, November 6th, an incident was reported to the Syracuse University Department of Public Safety. To our knowledge, students from Day Hall called the Syracuse University Department of Public Safety with reports of restrooms on floors four and six within the residence hall havin...g destruction of some of the restroom’s facilities and various surfaces within the restroom being vandalized with racial slurs. It has come to our attention that on Sunday, November 11th, residents from floor four and six were invited to a meeting with the Chief of Public Safety, the Chief Diversity Officer, the Dean of Students, and the Director of Student Living to dialogue the ongoing investigation. As an organization that promotes inclusivity and diversity, we stand in solidarity with the residents of both floors and Day Hall who have been impacted by this crime. The administration of Syracuse University has failed to inform residents of this incident and have put in jeopardy the safety of minority students on this campus. University officials need to be held accountable for how this situation is being handled. The Residence Hall Association demands that DPS, as well as Syracuse University administrators, be transparent with the occurrence of racially charged incidents within the vicinity of living spaces and to prioritize the safety of minority students on this campus. We emphasize the importance of a positive student living experience that is inclusive of all identities. We are disappointed in the lack of action and communication from the university in regard to student safety within a space that everyone should be able to call home. We would like to highlight several resources on this campus that are available for students impacted by racially biased incidents. Please refer to STOP bias for the bias-related incident form and any information regarding recognizing bias-related incidents and hate crimes. Students seeking support can contact the Counseling Center 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at 315-443-4715. Services are also provided by Hendricks Chapel at 315-443-2901, the Office of Student Assistance at 315-443-2901, and the Dean of Students Office at 315-413-4357. Additionally, please feel free to reach out to our President, Sadia Ahmed, at [email protected] with any questions or concerns on this campus. From Our Home to Yours, Residence Hall Association

Hey RHA, As most of you have probably seen, Syracuse University has decided to end its residential operations in the midst of this global pandemic that we are facing today. With the end of residential operations, it saddens us to say, the Residence Hall Association’s year comes to an end as well. This year has been an eventful one for our RHA family. We started off the year hopeful for the 2019-2020 year only to be faced with obstacles and moments where we couldn’t te...ll things would get better. We even hosted a conference through one of the most testing times this University has gone through this year. Throughout it all, we never stopped getting back up, making change, and moving forward. It makes us proud to see how much this organization has grown to push for change within our Orange family to ensure that Syracuse is a home for all. Regardless of your role within this organization, each and every one of you has made this year a successful year for RHA. By holding a position on hall council, attending meetings to provide input, speaking with your neighbors about room for improvement within the residence halls, or more, you have created change. That change does not end here. We encourage you to be a part of our family the next year and work with our incoming Executive Board in welcoming you back home in the fall. Be safe, stay healthy.
