A spooky song from your friends at RCS! Have a Happy & Safe Halloween! Song: "Les Djinns" ("The Genies") (Gabriel Faure)... English Translation by Marina Alexander: Walls, city and port, asylum of death, gray seas, where waft the breezes, all sleep. From the meadows comes a cry. It’s the sighing of the night. It is ringing, like a soul rising, always following a flame. A voice that’s so high just like a bell. See the dwarf jumping seeing how he leaps. Fleeing, he’s springing, springing, see how he frolics, dancing on waves of pattering feet. Rumbling approaches. The echo resounds. It’s like a bell tolling from a hellish shrine, like a mob it bellows, its thunderclaps rolling, sometimes it’s abating and sometimes it swells. Lord! the sepulchral voice of the djinns! Such din they raise! Let’s flee under the staircase to shelter dark and deep! My lamp is slowly failing and the shadows of the railing stretch as high as the ceiling, climbing up to the peak! Hellish their cries! they are screaming and crying! Horrible swarm urged on by the North Wind no doubt, o heaven! my home has been invaded. See how the walls bend beneath this dark force. Hear the house scream, it’s collapsing and leaning, and one may say its foundation’s careening, chased like a leaf swirling wild through the air, the wind drives their dance with its turbulent spin! Prophet! if your hand can save me from these dark demons of the night, I’ll bend my bare head down so gladly before holy censers’ perfume! Grant that on the doors of the faithful doomed will be their infernal sighings, and in vain scrape tips of their beating wings grating on the dark window panes! Of their wings in the distance their clamor now recedes. Weakening over the meadows, so feeble one might think one hears only a grasshopper’s cry in voice so thin or the sparkling sound of hailstones on a roof old and worn. Djinns so funereal, sons of decay, swirl in the darkness, darkness skipping away; their swarm is groaning; such a deep moaning, like a murmuring of waves we cannot see. Fading softly as it dies, like a ripple ’gainst the shore; like lamenting nearly silent of a saint for one who’s dead. One doubts, at night, I listen: all flee, all passes; erased all trace of din. - - - - - - - - - - Richmond Choral Society is excited to hold virtual rehearsals via ZOOM this Fall 2020 season. ANNOUNCEMENT: We are excited to share that RCS has resumed biweekly rehearsals via virtual means in hopes of an early Spring 2021 performance. NEW MEMBERS WELCOME! If you like to sing and are interested in becoming a member, now is a great time to take advantage of the opportunity to see what we’re all about, meet our members, and join us as we rehearse a variety of holiday choral repertoire!...
