Psychology Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Awarded to Kaitlin Gunther. This SURF study will examine the extent to which goldfish can visually discriminate between pictures of goldfish and other stimuli, including geometric shapes and other fish species (e.g., guppies). Our study will be done in the RIT Comparative Cognition and Perception (CCP) Lab (https://www.rit.edu/delonglab/). Previous studies in the CCP Lab have shown that goldfish have the ability to recognize 2D and 3D objects such as geometric shapes (circles vs. rectangles) and other animals (turtles vs. frogs). We will train and test seven to ten goldfish using a two-alternative-forced-choice task. This study will provide insight into whether goldfish recognize other members of their species using vision.
