SPECIAL TWO-PART WORKSHOP! On March 4th & 11th, we will have Daniel Maffia to present: So What? The value of DC-S and Supervision. What value does talking wi...th colleagues about the decisions you make during an interpreting assignment have? The purpose of this workshop is to give an overview of the constructs of Dean & Pollard’s Demand-Control schema and update participants on current research and best practices process for utilizing the decision making model. Participants will learn how this decision making model can overlay current cognitive process models that we already use. In his book, The Courage to Teach, Parker Palmer says, The growth of any craft depends on shared practice and honest dialogue among the people who do it. Supervision or reflective practice is a structured way professionals dialogue about their work with one other in order to analyze decisions made during interpreting assignments. Participants discuss how supervision can be applied to our own work. Other practice professions use this approach to help move their work to the next level. This workshop will help inform your work immediately when you step into an assignment as well as help prepare you for the ethics portion of the RID/CASLI Knowledge Certification Exam. March 4th & 11th, 2021: 5pm 8pm (CST) $60 Admission .6 CEUs! Presented in English Register: aslis.com/attend

HAPPY WANDERLUST WEDNESDAY TIGERS!!! Today we are highlighting Grace Anne, an ASL-English Interpretation major, who shares what it was like studying in Japan in... summer 2018. WHY JAPAN I can't imagine anyone looking at pictures of Japan and thinking "Nah...I don't want to go there." It is SO beautiful, full of rich history, and AMAZING food. It's a win, win, win! MUST SEE Eat sushi, obviously. But on a more serious note, the U.S. has a deep history in Japan. I think it is something that is often overlooked when Americans travel to Japan and it is a huge loss in cultural awareness. If you have the opportunity to visit Nagasaki, Hiroshima, or Okinawa, DO IT. Especially the Peace Memorial Museum in Hiroshima - it is incredibly heavy but worth making the effort to see. LOCAL CULTURE EVERYTHING is different in Japan. From the moment you wake up to going to bed at night, every move is a different cultural experience. The way you dress, the way you speak and interact with people, body language, and even the way you eat. It’s like a completely different world - and quite a learning experience. WANDERLUST TIPS Keep a journal while you are traveling. Your time is so brief, and a journal allows you to reflect on the great memories afterward. Also, learn the basics of the local language so you can carry basic conversations when you are there. There is no better way to learn about daily life than from the people who live it! Finally, if you have the flexibility to stay after your study abroad program it’s a great way to force yourself to become more immersed in the culture. You will be exhausted when you come home, but it will be SO worth it! RIT/NTID ASLIE RIT-NTID RIT College of Art and Design RIT College of Liberal Arts RIT - B.
