As a Physician Assistant major and Psychology minor, global health is incredibly important to me and studying psychology in Croatia gave me insight into how Europe treats mental illness. My professors at RIT Croatia taught me complicated theories and diagnostic criteria of psychology in their second language and I also visited places where psychology began, including the Traveling Freud Museum in Vienna, Austria. Studying Positive Psychology with Dr. Maja Tadic Vujicic gave... me insight into how to manage stress in new ways, including using meditation. Additionally, studying Abnormal Psychology with Dr. Renata Glavak Tkalic, an addiction specialist who is working on an Addictive Disease section for the DSM IV, enhanced my understanding and interest in addiction and other disorders. Studying abroad gave me new perspectives in psychology and fostered personal growth. No matter the course of study, everyone can study abroad if they make it a priority! Jesse attended the Summer Psychology in Croatia program in 2019. The most lasting souvenir from studying abroad is the memories you make and people you meet. Lauren Mackey, a packaging science major who studied in Scotland in spring 2019, shares her top five memories of living in Scotland in her recent post on the RIT Study Abroad blog. One of my favorite and first memories of moving to Scotland was exploring the campus. Growing up watching Harry Potter, I always dreamed of going to Hogwarts. You could imagine my surprise when my friends ...and I decided to walk to campus a few days before classes started to check it out. It really felt and looked like a real-life Hogwarts and the beauty is something pictures don’t do justice. HAPPY WANDERLUST WEDNESDAY TIGERS!!! Today we are highlighting Grace Anne, an ASL-English Interpretation major, who shares what it was like studying in Japan in summer 2018. WHY JAPAN... I can't imagine anyone looking at pictures of Japan and thinking "Nah...I don't want to go there." It is SO beautiful, full of rich history, and AMAZING food. It's a win, win, win! MUST SEE Eat sushi, obviously. But on a more serious note, the U.S. has a deep history in Japan. I think it is something that is often overlooked when Americans travel to Japan and it is a huge loss in cultural awareness. If you have the opportunity to visit Nagasaki, Hiroshima, or Okinawa, DO IT. Especially the Peace Memorial Museum in Hiroshima - it is incredibly heavy but worth making the effort to see. LOCAL CULTURE EVERYTHING is different in Japan. From the moment you wake up to going to bed at night, every move is a different cultural experience. The way you dress, the way you speak and interact with people, body language, and even the way you eat. It’s like a completely different world - and quite a learning experience. WANDERLUST TIPS Keep a journal while you are traveling. Your time is so brief, and a journal allows you to reflect on the great memories afterward. Also, learn the basics of the local language so you can carry basic conversations when you are there. There is no better way to learn about daily life than from the people who live it! Finally, if you have the flexibility to stay after your study abroad program it’s a great way to force yourself to become more immersed in the culture. You will be exhausted when you come home, but it will be SO worth it! RIT/NTID ASLIE RIT-NTID RIT College of Art and Design RIT College of Liberal Arts RIT - B. I’ve always been drawn to travel and learning about other countries. One memory that sticks out for me was when I was about 12. I went to an overnight camp that had an exchange with a school from Spain, so there were some Spanish kids at the camp which was exciting for me. I had never met anyone from Spain before, so it felt like a window into a world I hadn’t thought about before. One of the camp counselors told me about study abroad, and it’s been on my mind ever since. St...udying abroad has greatly helped with my confidence. I went to both London and Paris for my program. Going to two different foreign countries and living in two major cities while navigating by myself without getting lost made me feel like anything was possible. It may sound cheesy or cliché, but I was able to exercise my independence in a way that I hadn’t before in the U.S. There were so many impactful moments from my time abroad. I lived the dream by going to London and Paris. These were places that I had only seen on TV or read about in books, but I actually went and lived there! It still blows my mind to think about it. In Paris, I stayed with a French host and I practiced French with her and we talked about life in America versus France. In both London and Paris, I made some amazing friends that I’ll have for a lifetime. Imani is a Biomedical Sciences major and attended the CIEE Open Campus program in Paris, France and London, England in spring 2020.
