Today we commemorate Juneteenth. 155 years ago on this day, announcement of freedom was shared with the enslaved communities in Texas, and two and a half years after the emancipation proclamation, all Black individuals were finally free. However, as recent events indicate, we have not yet eradicated systemic racism from our society. As environmentalists it is imperative that we honor Black individuals by actively listening to their voices. Here are some resources (books, podcasts, movies, blogs, etc.) to understand the struggles for environmental justice, equity, and access to resources by Black communities, and how we can be allies in this fight: https://www.intersectionalenvironmentalist.com/black
We at RIT Sustainability stand in solidarity with everyone fighting for racial justice. Black Lives Matter. Events from recent weeks are a reminder of the disturbing history of racism in our country and the resulting legacy of trauma. This trauma, which led to protests and unrest over the weekend, comes not only from the continued physical violence endured by Black communities, but also from the disproportionate impacts of COVID 19, the disparities in access to resources (fin...ancial, medical, natural, etc.), and environmental burdens and pollutants in black and brown communities. These disparities cannot be ignored and can only be eradicated by addressing the racism that exists in our society today. At RIT Sustainability, our goal is to cultivate global citizens striving for a sustainable future. We strongly believe that a future without justice, equity, and inclusivity cannot be deemed sustainable. Understanding the wider world around them, global citizens should actively examine their role in that world and work to make it more equitable, just, and sustainable. As such, we ask you to join us in reflecting on our own contributions, identifying the roles we play in our society as it exists today, and committing to taking specific actions that will help bring about meaningful change. Our team will be curating and sharing information and resources to help educate and empower allies to speak out against injustice, in hopes that together we can dismantle systems of oppression and systemic racism. We welcome any input in curating information and hope to have authentic conversations and healthy dialogues with our community members on how we can rebuild a better and more sustainable future.
