Good Morning! Some of you have heard me go on and on about the importance of hoof angles, and how bad a broken-back hoof pastern axis and a low or negative palmar angle (PA) is for your horse. Well, I just watched an excellent presentation during our annual AAEP convention (virtual this year, which is actually great because I get to enjoy talks in my jammies with coffee in hand :D) and had my mind blown by these facts: 1. For every 1 degree drop in palmar angle the force on t...he deep digital flexor tendon increases by 4%!!! 2. Horses with navicular bone lesions consistently had lower palmar angles and lower insertion angles of the deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT)! 3. Similarly, horses with DDFT lesions had statistically significantly lower palmar angles, lower DDFT insertion angles, lower heel height, and lower toe angles. How does the old saying go?
