I challenge you to taste your food! Put away your phone, and notice the sensation of the utensil scraping across the plate, the texture of the food, the flavor, the smell, the feeling as it goes down your throat. Have you ever eaten a meal and been completely caught up in your head? Ever feel like your mind is a jumble of thoughts? We value the ability to multitask and are accomplishing more and yet people don’t seem less stressed. Being mindful means taking one thing at a ...time. So when you are walking, walk. When listening, listen. When you are eating, eat. One thing at a time. To quote Richard Sears PhD, the feeling of being busy only occurs when you think about what you are NOT doing. Have you ever noticed how children dance so authentically? We are naturally genuine, and over time we learn from feedback to inhibit our expression. Do you remember the feeling of dancing, singing, running and laughing with wild abandon? Guess what, you can still experience it. The mindfulness skill PARTICIPATE teaches us to engage in each activity with our full presence. So go ahead, let go and experience what it is to sing, spin, dance, roll down a hill. Let go of self cons...ciousness, judgement and fear. It is the opposite of sitting on the sidelines as you give yourself over. I’ll leave you with this image. The first time I learned participate was at an intensive DBT training. There were about seventy professionals in the room. We were instructed to stand up and dance the hokey pokey. Observe is just to pay attention and the next step is to describe what you are focusing on. Describe using facts, just words without assumption, judgement or interpretation. This tool helps us identify a thought as a thought and a feeling as a feeling. Thoughts and feelings are not facts. OBSERVE Skill - just notice. Focus on the garden, the details. Notice how it makes you feel. Notice what sensations it evokes. In your mind can you smell the garden? Hear it? touch it? Does it have a taste? Notice what thoughts come up. Just watch them, don’t try to change them, if you catch a judgement, just let it go. Don’t judge your judging.
