Years and years ago, Robyn’s Kitchen was a pickle side hustle while I waited tables full time. I used to sell jars of horseradish and spicy dill chips to the boys at @peconicprimemeats. It wasn’t very profitable, but it was a fun way to pass the time. My love for pickles is still there, though. I have a feeling there will be a lot of pickles in my life during this pregnancy @quailhillfarm dragon’s tongue, carrots and beets, @marileesfarmstand cucumbers and hot peppers

I saw this old woman in East Hampton when I was a kid. She was standing at an intersection in the rain holding a children’s lunchbox, no umbrella. She looked so profoundly miserable, and I had this overwhelming intuition that it was something deeper than just being cold and wet. I still think about her when I drive past that spot.

I ran into this man in Southampton a few days before this picture was taken. I grappled with leaving him be or introducing myself. I decided to be brief, that I would regret it if I didn’t say something. So I politely introduced myself, told him I was an aspiring chef, and that Kitchen Confidential was my favorite book. He didn’t say much, just smiled and said thank you as he shook my hand. It haunted me that I didn’t have any business cards on me. That I didn’t insist he let... me cook for him. That I could rake him fresh clams out of the bay. That I have an autistic son who makes traveling difficult-and watching his shows make my world a little less small. I thought, if I met him once I’ll meet him again, and I’ll have another chance. I’m glad I met him when I did. I’m grateful that he was kind and took the time to acknowledge me, but I will always regret not saying more. See more

I like to start my dinners off with a plate of raw peak season vegetables, then I incorporate them throughout the rest of the meal. Especially if my clients are traveling from out of state. I had a client call me and say, We’re easy, we live 5 minutes away from the grocery store. Sure, that’s great for miscellaneous ingredients, but produce? Nah. If you’ve never had a sugar snap pea that’s so fresh it sounds like a potato chip when you bite it than it’s my responsibility to... give you that experience. I’m a home cook, turned private chef. I don’t know advanced cooking techniques or French culinary terms but I do know that if you have ingredients this good, you don’t have to do much to it. You make sure you don’t over cook it, season it properly, and let it do the rest. There’s a reason I market myself as a farm to table chef. It’s a no brainer. See more

Buying your veggies whole leaves you with an abundance of leftover tops greens. In an attempt to limit waste I end up saving everything in my bottom refrigerator drawer and juicing them. For the record, I DO NOT enjoy drinking leaves, but sometimes if I’m lucky I’ll have some @milkpailfreshmarket apple cider in the fridge to make it tolerable. I just hold my nose and chug. Then eat an entire loaf of bread. #nowaste
