Honored to be featured in The Strad magazine TWO months in a row! This month's Technique article features excerpts from my book Topics in Jazz Bass: Soloing, and takes you through my best advice for developing great bass solos.
Excited to be part of this online strings festival! Not only will there be deep dives into double bass technique and performance with me and Jeremy Kurtz-Harris..., we’ll also have focused sessions on practice techniques, career development, orchestral playing, and body mapping. Each day will end with an awesome (public) faculty concert! I hope you will consider joining us for what promises to be a truly enriching time. Visit https://www.baylor.edu/music/index.php?id=976042 for daily schedule, guest artists, and full application information.
finally found a good three string bass, just a bit small...
The International Society of Bassist's Distinguished Achievement Award is given biennially for a lifetime of accomplishment. It is the ISB's highest honor, and ...we are proud to announce the recipient of our 2021 Distinguished Achievement Award, Edgar Meyer. (Photo credit: Jim McGuire) Edgar began studying bass at age five with his father and continued with Stuart Sankey. He is the winner of numerous awards, including a 2002 MacArthur Award, and is the first bassist to receive the Avery Fisher Career Grant (1994) and the Avery Fisher Prize (2000). Equally renowned as a performer and composer, Edgar made his Boston Symphony Orchestra debut with Seiji Ozawa conducting in his Double Concerto with Yo-Yo Ma. Among many other recordings, he collaborated with Mr. Ma and Mark O'Connor on Appalachia Waltz and Appalachian Journey on the Sony Classical label, where he is an exclusive artist) and toured the United States, Europe, and Asia with the trio. Edgar's Violin Concerto, written for Hilary Hahn, was premiered and recorded in 1999. He frequently performs and composes for music festivals, including Santa Fe, Aspen, Tanglewood, Caramoor, Chamber Music Northwest, and Marlboro. Edgar is an artist member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and a visiting professor at the Royal Academy of Music. He joined the faculty of the Curtis Institute of Music in 2003.
happy new year each and every one!
MERRY CHRISTMAS! A little different kind of Christmas... I tried to make this arrangement of well known Christmas Song as unpredictable as this whole year has been.
Inspired by the legendary Paul Ellison and the effervescent Xavier Foley, I, along with the technically gifted and masterfully virtuostic Andres Vela wish you a very happy holidays! (and a warm and heartfelt bassmass to Johnny Hamil as well <3)

A cautionary tale from a colleague's shop. Having hand sanitizer near your instrument is not a good idea.

Take your scales to the next level this Wednesday
Hey bassists, this is a cool competition where soloists submit a video, judges give feedback, and then the entrants submit a second video based on the comments. The focus is on improvement. There is a bass category. Tell your students!

Friends if you attended any of the Bass Retreats, you likely got to work with amazing teacher Katie Fittipaldi on some basics of Alexander Technique. I'm so excited that she's offering her AT course online this semester, and the cost is quite reasonable! There are a few spots left - grab your seat in the class!
