6 month old Tucker did a fabulous job at his first Tutoring session. Such a sweet sweet boy! He is the second dog in his family that I’ve had the pleasure of working with. They knew that getting started when he was young would mean that we could build the behaviors we wanted instead of having to fix the ones we didn’t when Tucker got older!!

You’re a human. Your dog is a dog. Crazy, right? Well, when we overlook this simple (and seemingly ridiculous) fact, or get this 1st lesson in properly communi...cating with your dog WRONG, misbehavior is sure to follow. Owners often attribute human motives behind their dogs bad behavior. For example, I’ve heard on more than one occasion, owners blaming their dogs for holding grudges for leaving them alone for an extended period of time. Irritated by their owner’s absence, the dog begrudgingly leaves a healthy pile for their return. It would be easy to translate your dog’s cowered head and tucked tail as him knowing what he did 40 minutes prior was wrong, when in reality, he is simply interpreting YOUR disgusted body language in real time, and is responding instantaneously. Dogs aren’t born with moral judgement, nor are they capable of revenge. They do precisely what they are ALLOWED to. Dogs do what they want, when they want, selfishly seeking pleasure along their pathUnless. Guided. Elsewhere. Dogs are speaking to us all the time. And they are always listening. They live in the present moment, and are interpreting their environment and you, all while seeking opportunities to self-serve. The more something works to self-serve, the more frequently it will occur. Humans, on the other hand, are distracted by their daily lives, trapped in the past, or the future, never really seeing their dog’s current needs. It’s OUR job to let our dogs know what works for them isn’t necessarily what works for us. Effective leadership, with both yes and no, encourages our dogs to make respectful choices based on what WE allow, not what is self-serving to them. Instead of forcing your dog to try and understand you, why not try to understand his needs instead?

Miss Scout did a great job today working on building confidence! Encouraging dogs to go over, under, around & through, helps them see that they are capable of handing new things!

Today was all about high level distraction for Macey! Having a dog who doesn’t explode when something exciting happens around them keeps them safe and allows you to include them more often!

The mindset that training is only for dogs that need it is typically how dogs end up needing it . There are many dogs out there that simply deserve it. They de...serve more and they aren’t getting it. As a result they end up living a life far more limiting than what they could have if the human learned how to help the dog reach their full potential. This means loose leash walking, off leash reliable, well mannered and respectful in public/social settings, learns when it’s time to play/goof off and when it’s not and far more. See more
