Name: Sarah Beasley Medical School:Medical University of South Carolina Hometown: Clemson, SC... Why did you select URMC for your residency? I chose URMC for residency because I felt that I would get the best training possible in an incredibly supportive environment that fostered both my personal and professional growth. Being from the South I also wanted to explore a new area of the country, and Rochester offered everything I could hope for in a city. What is the best feature of your residency program? By far the best feature is the people. I could not have asked for a better, more kind and supportive group of co-residents and faculty. What are your favorite things about Rochester? The festivals are incredible, especially during the warmer months. I love that Rochester is a large city with more rural surroundings areas that offer a wide range of outdoor activities. Can you identify a favorite or most impactful faculty member/mentor and why? I would have to say Dr. Robbins has been one of the most impactful faculty members. He is an exceptional mentor, program director and teacher and I feel like I learn something new during every interaction. Where would you like to end up/career goals/aspirations? My interests include congenital cardiology, ICU and hospital medicine at this time, as well as medical education. I am continuing to explore career options related to these fields and hope to find a path that combines multiple interests. One thing you wish you knew before starting your residency here? While I technically knew this, I could not imagine how much snow there would be in the winter. Fun fact(s) about you? Prior to starting residency I went to New Zealand. During that trip I had the opportunity to Bungee jump off one of the tallest locations in the world, and it was amazing. I would do it again in a heart beat Hobbies and interests outside of residency? My hobbies include riding my horse, running, playing with my dogs, and eating great food! #rocmedpeds #urmc #residencylife #urochester #secondyear #medpedslove

Name: Eric Jorgensen Medical School: Jacobs Schools of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences of the University at Buffalo Hometown: DeWitt, NY... Why did you select URMC for your residency? URMC has a reputation of excellence and in particular a rich history of a strong Med-Peds community. Upon meeting different faculty members, I was then so impressed with just how approachable and dedicated everyone was to ensuring each resident had the best learning experience possible throughout their time here, leading to meaningful long term careers What is the best feature of your residency program? The best thing about our program is just how strong the network of support and connections are across not only the Med-Peds community but also with the each categorical program respectively. The support is there whether it be for help with career advice, success in residency, or life outside the hospital What are your favorite things about Rochester? Some of my favorite things are the access to so many wonderful parks, lakes, mountains, and trails. I also love how affordable it is to live here and having all four seasons Can you identify a favorite or most impactful faculty member/mentor and why? I am constantly impressed with Dr Robbins' ability to get to know each of us on such a personal basis and provide support across any area I can think of. I learn so much from working with him on the wards and at clinic. At the same time, he frequently reaches out just to check in on how we are doing as people first. Where would you like to end up/career goals/aspirations? I currently am hoping to go on to fellowship in Allergy/immunology. One thing you wish you knew before starting your residency here? University of Rochester Med-Peds Residency Program 23.07.2020

Name: Erin Good Medical School: George Washington Medical School Why did you select URMC for your residency?... I was looking for a program that truly valued ongoing quality improvement, community engagement, quality education, and the biopsychosocial model. URMC lives and breathes its motto meliora, meaning ever better and this culture of improvement is tangible in all of the programs and in the hospital. Many residents are actively involved in community projects and could speak to how they addressed the social determinants of health. The education here is inclusive, it involves a round table discussion of cases with faculty input and an environment that encourages questioning and challenging to better serve our patients. And last but not least, the biopsychosocial model is apparent in rounds and the way we discuss and treat our patients daily. It's a refreshing and inspiring place to learn and practice. What is the best feature of your residency program? The residents. The way our team supports each other is inspiring and unique. There is always someone there to help, whether its with the everyday practice of medicine or if it's debriefing difficult patient cases, we support each other. Our clinic is a place to recharge and get inspired even on our busiest days because we get to spend time together, learn from each other and our Med-Peds faculty. The workroom is filled with laughter, a sense of family, tears when we work through sad and difficult patient encounters, and so much evidence-based teaching. What are your favorite things about Rochester? The proximity to outdoor activities, the green space, the diversity of people who live here, the diversity and quality of food, and the presence of inspiring community organizations that work on empowering underserved and underheard urban communities. Can you identify a favorite or most impactful faculty member/mentor and why? This is difficult because there are so many!! In nearly every rotation, from NICU to MICU, to primary care in our culver clinic, to hospital medicine or hospital pediatrics, there has been a faculty member that has inspired me, motivated me, and challenged me to think differently

University of Rochester Med-Peds Residency Program 01.07.2020

Name: Chloe Swanger Medical School: Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine Hometown: Altoona, PA... Why did you select URMC for your residency? I wanted a Med-Peds program with a strong Peds, Medicine, and combined clinic with access to complex care. These were instantly evident during my research and interview at URMC. What is the best feature of your residency program? The people of course! It is nice to have a strong Med-Peds identity while also feeling comfortable with my Peds and Medicine colleagues. What are your favorite things about Rochester? I love having access to shopping, restaurants, and activities while also being able to take a walk through the woods or visit the lake. I can do all of this in a 15 minute or less drive. I am also obsessed with walking the Erie canal and then getting ice cream at Pittsford dairy; I do this most of my days off. Where would you like to end up/career goals/aspirations? Still not fully clear. I like the feel of a community hospital associated with a large academic medical center (like Highland Hospital). I would like to have a combination of inpatient and outpatient while also keeping Medicine and Pediatrics. Complex care has always been close to my heart. If I were to do a specialty, I greatly enjoy Rheumatology. Luckily I still have time to consider all the options a Med-Peds residency allows me to have! I will likely do some strange hybrid of work Hobbies and interests outside of residency? Kayaking, hiking, flea marketing, reading romance novels, celtic music, and playing the viola. #rocmedpeds #URMC #secondyear #ResidencyLife #medpedslove

University of Rochester Med-Peds Residency Program 08.06.2020

Name: Annie Lips Medical School: University of Minnesota Hometown: Minneapolis, MN... Why did you select URMC for your residency? I left the interview day feeling very impressed with the combination of intelligence and compassion that I saw in the residents, as well as the faculty and program leadership's commitment to their residents' formation as healthcare professionals and as human beings. What is the best feature of your residency program? The people. Both in the med-peds program and the institution as a whole, wonderful people abound! I also have come to really love our continuity clinic What are your favorite things about Rochester? Small city with the amenities of urban life but also a surprising amount of green space and natural beauty. A diverse population and people who care about their community. Can you identify a favorite or most impactful faculty member/mentor and why? I won't name any one specifically, but I've worked with several attendings on the inpatient wards recently who have been awesome mentors, particularly as I embrace my new-ish role as a senior resident. Mostly because they've taught me not only medical knowledge and decision-making, but also communication skills, how to run a team effectively, and how to make a difference in the lives of our patients and team members. Where would you like to end up/career goals/aspirations? I'm still not completely decided. I'm considering primary care, ideally with a medically and socially complex patient population (adults and kids). But I also love being in the hospital, so we'll see. One thing you wish you knew before you started your residency here? My clinic team likes to do a brief work-out together at the start of our clinic sessions. Should've been working on my planks to get in shape for that. Fun fact(s) about you? I once built a recorder (the musical instrument) out of PVC pipe for a high school science project, and it was one of my proudest creations Hobbies and interests outside of residency? Vegetarian cooking. Kombucha brewing. Reading. Gardening. Keeping in touch with family and friends, both near and far. #rocmedpeds #URMC #secondyear #ResidencyLife #medpedslove
