In light of the events currently unfolding, I would like to do my part in being socially responsible. For the next few weeks, I am limiting the number of daily appointments and the availability of online booking. For those that already have scheduled appointments, know that I will be here and doing everything I can to promote a safe and healthy environment. Please call or text me directly at (585) 348-8858 if you need to be seen, or have any questions or concerns during this trying time. Please take care of yourselves and those around you! ~Dr. Matt

Molecular hydrogen has many potential applications. One not yet mentioned is for sports performance. In this preliminary study, the hydrogen test group was shown to have a statistically significant reduction of lactic acid after exercise. And while this study had the subjects drink molecular hydrogen water, it’s been our experience that inhaling hydrogen saturates the system more extensively, so the potential is there for even more profound effects! The take home message from... this is that hydrogen not only has the potential to improve performance during a sport/activity/exercise, but also speed up recovery afterwards. This is huge for athletes and those looking to maximize human performance. Reach out if you have questions about the uses of hydrogen or if you’re interested in booking inhalation sessions! https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3395574/

There’s a reason I have people get up and walk around after a few corrections! Walking has more power than we realize. Just because something isn’t intense, or you don’t feel much while you’re doing it, doesn’t mean that thing isn’t helping your body! When in doubt, walk it out. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releas/2017//170424141340.htm

Cranial nerves are super important! Some, like the vagus nerve, have interactions with so many systems of the body. Being able to work on them on your own can help speed up the healing process. This article talks about how stimulating areas of the ear can increase activity in 2 (of the 12) cranial nerves we have. This is a great thing to do for self-care! https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5874575/

Piggy-backing off of yesterday’s post is this article highlighting the potential neuroprotective effects of hydrogen therapy. This piece is specifically about stroke, but the same idea applies to nerve injuries. In practical terms, during times of peripheral nerve compression or impingement the nerve is not getting enough oxygen. This is where molecular hydrogen can help. Not only will hydrogen limit further damage (oxidative stress), but it will help in repairing tissues quicker. This has the potential to be hugely beneficial in recovering from things such as sciatica or carpal tunnel syndrome, among many other things! https://www.futuremedicine.com/d/pdf/10.2217/fnl-2019-0002&

Breathing is such an important factor for health, but is a task we almost universally take for granted. Oxygen is one of the fundamental prerequisites for healthy function of all cells in your body (along with glucose and proper stimulation). Unfortunately, the majority of us rely to heavily with breathing through the mouth and not through the nose. This type of breathing creates a chain-reaction of negative events, that typically go left unchecked for years. ... The podcast linked below highlights some of the ways that we work with improving breathing patterns for individuals that are in a state of pain or want to improve their overall function. Improving your breathing can reduce inflammation, calm down pain, improve quality of sleep, increase energy levels, allow for greater strength gains, etc. There are so many benefits to breathing better! If you get a chance, take a listen, read the book, or come in to see how we can help. The Oxygen Advantage by Patrick McKeown https://www.stopchasingpain.com/scp-podcast-168-oxygen-adv/

Case Feature A patient presents with right foot pain that came on after walking around while on vacation. She reports that there was no trauma or falls during her trip- that she simply walked around enjoying the sites. The pain has been fairly frequent for the last 3 months since she got back, and it just won’t go away. Symptoms are located to the right inner heel, and inner arch of the foot. She has tried doing some stretches on her own, and has even purchased shoe inserts t...o help reduce some of the tension. While these things give her some temporary relief, the pain persists. During our intake, it was revealed that she did have something fall on the outside of her right ankle 1 week before she left for the trip. She didn’t mention this initially because she didn’t think the trauma was anything big or worthwhile- that it was nothing. After our evaluation, it was determined that her pain was mechanical and not from a trapped nerve, or anything like that. We found that even though her pain was felt on the bottom of her foot, the real problem was her body not wanting to use the outer muscles and joints of the right foot and ankle. The nothing trauma before her trip was actually the source of all of her pain! We treated the tissues and joints on the outside of the ankle, some dysfunctions on the inside of her ankle, and included homework that focused on properly re-loading the outside of her right lower leg. After 2 visits, she was walking without pain and feeling herself again. Take home message: all pain and dysfunction need a catalyst. Even though you might feel like something was nothing when it happened, that nothing event might have been the jump start to the pain that won’t go away. Get yourself evaluated if you have symptoms that won’t quit!
