Did you know Scott Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag" is associated with the city of Sedalia, Missouri? That Jelly Roll Morton’s "Jelly Roll Blues" was one of the first published jazz compositions? Or that George Gershwin left school at 15 and started earning $394 a week at a music publishing firm? Not bad for a teenager! PREMIERING TONIGHT! Jessie Montgomery’s Starburst opens the program. Gentle melodies are juxtaposed with dramatic gestures to create a unique and multidimensional soundscape. Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll, a symphonic poem dedicated to the birth of his son, is one of his smallest works composed for a chamber orchestra. Completed six months after his Fourth Symphony, Schubert found inspiration in his Fifth Symphony through famed virtuoso, Mozart.
